There was an issue with Farmville today with farms not loading up properly and as you could imagine, the Zynga forums were lit up with people complaining.
As part of their troubleshooting they gave directions on how to do a tracert (in a nutshell, a list of IP address "hops" between your PC and the target) and post the results in the forum.
A forum open for all to see - everyone.
Yep, they asked people to post their IP addresses as well as a very nice street map to where they are and if you're at a company, oh buy! You also posted the IP addresses of routers and gateways in your company's network!
While I agree that a tracert will help find out where the problem was, they should have created a new admin account and tell people to send it to them in a private message, NOT to have people post it in pubic view.
Several people posted warnings about this but many disappeared for being "unproductive posts" A thread telling people about the dangers of doing this was closed and deleted.
Hours later "new" members (join date Dec 2010 with 1 or 2 posts, including the post they made) started to pop up saying don't worry, it's safe, showing people other ways to do it, etc..
It is very scary that over 2000 people have posted this. I'm sure most have been harvested by now (some of us joked what would happen if 4chan got a hold of that thread?)
