And I already have an addictive personality, ha.

Is Guild Wars windows only? We're Mac peeps...so I think that is more reason for WoW? Also found out he got us hard drives for Xmas... Looks like I'll be byi g the games. I'll just cut back on the wine.....

I'm thinking it's only Windows. www.guildwars.com You could look there and see if it's for Mac too.

I wasn't aware you were only Mac folks :P

just looked myself. Yes, it's windows only. Sorry

I just got my boyfriend addicted to WoW by accident.

I just started playing it again when Cata came out and he was doing the internet version of peeping over my shoulder and watching (Skype's Share screen) and was like ok that looks fun, the next day I find out he's bought the whole lot

        He's already a level 21 hunter in 3 days. I'm so proud.

I hit 82 last night on my Dranei Hunter! For the Alliance! oh yeah I've leveled Worgen up to 22 plus I have a goblin at 9. Me bored easy?

Wheee, another set of WoW converts. There's a lot of us who play. If you guys do pick it up, let me know and I'll give you my realid username on there so you have someone you can bug if you have questions (it'll let you talk to me when we're both online even if you're playing on a different server).

Guild Wars is a good game, but not a deep game. It won't last near as long as WoW would when it comes to depth and content. Also, its non-sub model gives it a lot of raging jackholes too, honestly. Though the game lets you hide from them while adventuring at least since everything outside of town is instanced to you personally. Which really makes it feel more like a single player game anyhow.

Outlands is the worst part of WoW now, with the lead up Cata quests being not only easier but worth more exp than supposedly higher level Outlands quests. 1-60 has a very brisk pace now. But if you make sure to suck up every Cata quest you can before Outlands, you can get up to 61-62 before you have to go there. That will let you skip right over the first zone for the most part and get to some meatier quest exp in Zangramarsh or whatever that place was called.

Just have to put up with it till 68 when you can go to WOTLK, which is faster. When you hit 77, you can wear Catacombs gear, and since it has near 300% the stats of WOTLK gear, throwing it on at 77 basically lets you cheat your way through 77-80.

When you finally hit Cata content again at 80-85 the levels start to go by pretty fast again. Faster than WOTLK. About a bar to 84 now and I haven't even been playing that much.

But yes, PvP servers are god damn awful cesspits. When I got dragged back into WoW this time by friends it was to a PvP server. Fscking *awful*. You can't quest. Period. Someone 40 levels higher will come by and instagib you. Had to level almost entirely in dungeons. Which is meh. Even though I hit 80 there just couldn't stand it and left for a PvE server. Where I can actually *relax* when playing.

*waves* Recently back into WoW myself. I'm on a RP server, Wyrmrest Accord. They're basically like PvE servers except you see a lot more roleplaying around, where people actually act like their characters. There are RP/PvP servers too, but a beginner should stay away from them.

Oh, and I'm Horde, btw, though I do have a worgen rolled on that server that's parked at level 1.

It is really on the type of game you like, more than anything. Being a fantasy-rpg fan:
Guild Wars (3 chapters + expansion each bought separately, no fees)
D&D Online (no fees, paid content)
Lord of The Rings (also no fees, upgraded accounts get more features)

Sci-fi gaming, I think you will have to start drinking the cheap stuff and fork out the subscription fees.
Something kind of sad about the way that things have come to be.
Desensitized to everything, what became of subtlety?

That fox is so adorable. I want to scratch his ears.

Not as in to Sci-fi as much as fantasy...and most of the wine I drink is $5/bottle (Thank you, Herding Cat and most Chile wines) so I should be okay.

You're honestly not going to find a really decent MMO without the $15/month fee. Which honestly isn't that much.
                      This. Totally this.

My MMO of choice is City of Heroes, which I find to be a lot of fun. Much better with a group to hang out with, though.

I used to do WoW, but when I tried to get back into it, I just wasn't feeling it.

Everquest II is still out there, but I have no idea how it is these days. I haven't played since not long after launch.

City Of Heroes is good if you don't want anything deep and just want something to play with a few friends on the weekend. Sucks arse without a group though and its really showing its age, to be honest. Hopefully DC Universe can spice up that particular MMO genre. Personally I've played CoH off and on ( see if you can find my AT guides. ;p ) but it was never deep enough for me to stick with for more than a couple months.

Everquest 2 went Free2Play and has a ton of content ( They're on what, expansion #9? ). It also has a ton of features that WoW has desperately needed for years ( Guild functions, housing, etc ). Its problem honestly comes right down to graphics. Its really just an ugly, ugly game to be frank. With hideous character models. It also lacks any sort of pvp system. Having only recently gotten battlegrounds but only at end game levels. The designers make no allowances for PvP balance, its just "Well if you want to fight go ahead, just don't expect us to cater to it". So its pretty whacked class balance wise.

If Sony actually tried, EQ2 could really contend with WoW.

Have you seen anything of the latest expansion or the latest issue releases for City?

There's quite a bit of new stuff in there that's pretty interesting. Plus, they updated the graphics (optional, so people with wimpy systems can still play).

Whether you need a group or not has always depended upon what AT you choose to play. I tend to go with support classes (buffs, shields, debuffs, etc), so I need to team. But if you roll with one of the damage ATs, you can rock most of the game solo. Heck, I know of people who currently run one of the task forces (requires minimum 6 team members before you can even start it) solo for the bragging rights.

But with the addition of alignments (including the ability to go from hero to villain or vice versa) and finally the addition of the Incarnate slots, the game's getting more depth to it.
