Oh Knit Princess *shakes head*. The author would be one of the friends telling me to do it. She's actually on the lower end of the crafty spectrum of people I know. This should tell you something here.

Treasure: I'm sure you could find someone willing to make it for you, but I warn you it wouldn't be a cheap blanket unless said person loved you a whole hell of a lot. I'm looking at about a year and a half to get this finished (if I'm that lucky and fast)

Well like I said they haven't set a date yet so I don't know when I can promise pictures however here's what I know so far:

They're doing a Pagan handfasting (bride is pagan) with some Jewish elements (mentor is Jewish) and its happening outside. They're both in the SCA so she is handsewing her dress which I described earlier and he is handsewing and 11th century ultra fancy Icelandic tunic which we think was used as a wedding tunic. She's spinning the yarn and weaving the trim for his tunic. It is going to be outdoors and guests are encouraged to dress in either Norse or 14th century French garb depending on which person they're there for. I'm pretty sure he's writing the vows, his in 11th century Icelandic verse, hers in 14th century French poetics.

ahhh, geeks. Sounds very pretty already. Is there going to be evergreen bowers? I can picture them under those tall, skinny evergreens I never remember the name(s) of. Maybe with snow. ... maybe no snow.

"We don't have a gold plated toilet"

What an awesome present! And I thought I was bad enough with what I'm doing for my parents' anniversary in autumn.
They will have been married 55 years (which is the emerald, so I'm told). I've sneaked one of their wedding photos, a lovely head and shoulders one of them smiling at each other, out of their album, copied it and had a cross stitch chart made from it. Needless to say it's a black and white photo, so it's all varying shades of grey...ouch my eyes.... But I'm certainly not in your league!

but that's stunning in its own right! And that's much more personal to them. Pictures when it's done?

Pictures? Sure, if it turns out as well as I hope!
I'm glad you think that it's a good idea, I know that my dad is planning on buying my mum an emerald ring but I was having trouble thinking what I could get for a couple that was something to do with emeralds... so I decided I'd forget about trying to link it, and just try and do something personal, as you say. (Though I suppose maybe when I have it framed, I could see about a green mount, maybe? )

That does sound really cool. I wish I had a talent for crafty stuff. I can crochet kind of. My mom tried teaching me somethings when I was a kid but it never really took.

                          Shanky,
my grandmother was the only person i knew who crocheted and knitted...and she passed away in May.... but she did make me a double-wedding ring afghan in my colors of purple and silver... (mom picked out the wrong variegated though, went with a purple to pink, when i would've chosen a purple to blue/green) and i "no can haz" until i'm married...

It looks like A LOT of work...
I could see doing each of the Trees in a different color, to represent the elements, and then the background in a neutral, and then the knot-work along the border in variegated greens... or silver trees on a purple background, with the green knots.... I'm just sayin'..... LOL

any way, Good Luck with it, and it looks and sounds like a WONDERFUL wedding gift!

Why not have another try? When I first tried to knit, when I was a kid, I kept pulling the wool too tight (or something like that) and for some years I thought I just couldn't do it. Then when I was in my late teens I saw a pattern that I feel in love with, swallowed my pride and asked my mum for more lessons and never looked back.
But there's all different kinds of crafts to try - why not parchment craft, or felt work, or cross stitch? Sometimes you get craft workshops being held where you can go along and just give different things a try.
