  • Shanky's getting ambitious again. This never ends well.

So my mentor is getting married. He and his fiancee haven't set a date since she wants to finish making her dress first. Ultra fancy 14 century French dress in sapphire blue with a cream cloak with the sleeves trimmed in squirrel fur. Completely irrelevant to this discussion but I'm impressed as all hell since she's hand sewing it and well it gives context to the crazy I'm debating.

I'm making them an afghan. This in and of itself isn't crazy. Blankets are pretty easy when you get right down to it, it's a giant rectangle. This isn't the ambitious part.

I'm making a kingsized afghan. Slightly more difficult since it's farking huge. Still not the ambitious part.

I'm making a kingsized afghan in the yggdrasil pattern. If you haven't seen it it's 4 trees in the center done in cables with roots and branches entwined in celtic knot work. With 4 borders alternating between celtic knot cables and lace. It'll be 72 inches squared once it's done. Guess what? Still not the ambitious part.

I'm debating spinning the yarn for it. As in making every step of this blanket from sheep to bed spread. In an unknown time frame. A friend lent me a spinning wheel (I normally use a spindle) and it's giving me all sorts of ideas about my possible output.

Someone really ought to tell me no, since my friends are all this level of crafty crazy and are unhelpful in tempering ideas like this.
Me to a friend: I know I'm crazy, you know I'm crazy, the zombies at the end of the world will know I'm crazy. Thus not eating my brain for fear of ingesting the crazy. It's my survival plan.

I'm pretty sure they'll forgive you if it's late.

You need to promise to post pictures of the dress.

        Ooooh... Must post progress pics!

Not necessarily of the quilt as you make it (to keep the actual output kind of a surprise), but of spinning the wool and stuff.

... I'm thinking you're not going to get any better response here than from your other friends.

Well- technically etiquette for weddings states that you have up to a year after the wedding to give a gift, if you plan to do so, so it wouldn't be "late." Awesome present in the year + unknown amount of extra time you have left? Totally go for it and share photos!

*snort* nope you guys are no better than my friends. I've got friends who have agreed to finance it if I do it (since I'm a poor college student and all). I think I'm going to do it. I think my right leg is going to try to kill me from the treadling I'm about to undertake on this wheel.

You have the time (interesting fact, Taboo! Thankees!). You have the inclination; you have the will and the talent and the goods.
Why not!? Just think of how fabulous and beautiful it will be! And useful! And fabulous!
EDIT: pictures please! And think of your portfolio! O_O

thanks for finding the link teh_blumchenkinder! The only place I have an image of it is on ravelry and I know you can't see that without an account. Hmmm... Alright so I guess in a year or so people should expect a photo heavy progression thread?

....and this is probably going to be my, hmmm, next, next, next, next project. I need to finish my hat, preferably before winter leaves entirely, and I promised my sister a cool scarf, and I need to finish my first afghan that I left off to knit a scarf for my niece for christmas, and I've been wanting to learn socks, plus I won't be able to afford that much yarn until I get a job.

isn't it stunning? I want to make the full sized one since its for a wedding. I might have started the spinning with the pound of white colonial wool I've got...

I'm bad at this 'I shouldn't do it because it'll be a ton of work' game.

I totally need a new knitting project and may have to attempt this! I wanted something ambition, but I will probably do the afgan size rather than the baby blanket size or largest size.
My fella is a viking at heart and I think an afgan with the yggdrasil design on it would be awesome!

                          Oh, well, damn it . . .

Ya'll HAD to show me that, didn't you?

Shanky, you have to knit that. 'Cause I'm gonna patchwork-quilt it . . . .

We're all fools here, aren't we?

that is a beautiful design. I am going to start working on granny squares and see where I am at by Christmas. I really want to get afghans for all the women in my family and the hubby's family. It is approx 15 blankets.

And so want pictures of your progress.
