I did and managed to look both stunning and very modern (not to brag or anythingQuoth iradney View PostI'm borrowing my Mom's pearl necklace for my wedding.
), then again I had a red dress with a high neckline so they had something to contrast against but they can still look gorgeous with a traditional white dress (though when paired with white I prefer them to rest against your skin, not the dress).

kay first off, i gotta say that i had no idea that so many people here live in idaho.
now on to pearls...they are, in no way, out of style! i love love love pearls. i have a necklace that's pretty long...rests a few inches above my belly button. most of it is chain, but the bottom bit is pearls, then a cluster made up of pearls, a metal lace heart, and a few other bobbles. it's one of my faves! then there's the pearls that i inherited from my grandmother. i have a long one and a short one that's made up of many strands. i wear 'em all. i just wish i had more!
i don't think pearls will ever go out of style. they're too versatile.If you want to be happy, be. ~Leo Tolstoy

Go for the pearls! I love the way they look and how flexible they are as accessories. They can go with anything that is a bit dressy, professional, or formal. They also can go with any age. My sister and I share a pearl necklace. She wore it to her Homecoming dance with her little black dress. I wore it to a New Year's Eve Party with a nice shirt and a skirt that comes just above the knee on me.
The pearls matched with the black dress made Munchkin so much older! I just couldn't believe how grown up she looked in that with her hair up and make up done ever so tastefully (by moi
). She looked so beautiful!

Ooh! Sounds lovely!Quoth firecat88 View PostChiming in to say that I have a bracelet of freshwater pearls and amethyst (got it at the Denver museum) and next to my necklace, it's one of my most favorite pieces of jewelry that I wear.
I wouldn't mind getting some pearl earrings, like the kind worn around the medieval era. I'm trying to find some good references for Medieval jewelry, but most books have grainy copy-of-a-copy pictures.
And you try to find any recreations on the Web, they're blatantly obviously modern designs.
My birthstone is ruby, which I don't mind. I'm a bit disappointed that my son's birthstone is topaz (boring brown!).I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

another vote for "get the pearls if you want them" I agree that pearls never go out of style;
my mom and i were watching a movie the other night and the guy got the girl a pearl necklace... My mom said something about it being significant - ie pearls are for special occasions (or at least that style he got) and if you're not going to be around for the special occasions for me to wear it too, don't bother...
also add me to the list of "I hate my birthstone" - Peridot (and it is pronounced DOT, not dough) I amethyst, not a fan of diamonds, like tanizite, mystic topaz (OMG!) [blue/green/purple] and i happen to like garnet - cause it looks like blood (why, yes i do go to the goth bar in town, why do you ask?)
I have a set of pearls that i got out one of the oyster tanks @ Sea World in San Diego when my family went out there for a vacation; 2 from 1 oyster; they've been set aside and will be made into earrings for my wedding - i want them set in silver "cages" on a french wire so they kind of dangle, and don't have to be drilled or glued (damaged!)I am well versed in the "gentle" art of verbal self-defense
