  • I, too, am in a boat where I can't afford a gym membership either. I've been picking up the activity levels a bit though, including riding my bike to the grocery store. I think I'm going to have to invest in a basket or a messenger rack, because carrying 30 lbs of groceries in a backpack while riding just isn't working, and is pain inducing.

However as of April 17, I took my official weighs and measurements and I have been weighing and measuring myself every Sunday the last 2 weeks. So far, no inches lost, but I'm down 5.4 lbs, so that means I'm getting back into the groove and going in the right direction.

My DVD player crapped out on me, so I'm going to have to find a place to put my laptop to play my workout DVDs, where I can see the screen well enough and still manage to do my workouts in the process. This should be interesting. There are forces that seem to be working against my getting exercise and eating right, but I refuse to let them get me down!

5.6 lbs, and the store I went to 2as 3.6 miles round trip, and managed in just under half an hour. Not fantastic, but not terrible either.

Keep up the work peoples, and firecat, I'm not even sure how that machine works. So, you've got my respect, it looks torturous...

    • 3.5 half hour hike yesterday....was going to be longer, but a few of us had knee problems.

Then destroyed the work I did by eating nachos and drinking beer. Sigh, and today shouldn't be great diet today...we're heading to the CT Ren faire.

Tomorrow....back to the gym for a short workout, then hitting up our sea chanty place. Oh well...I'll be good soon, I swear

It's not nearly as frightening as it looks. And, actually, it works in two ways.

For the legs: Lie flat on your back on the glide board, with your feet propped up on the leg press board, and do leg squats (this is what I did yesterday)

For the arms: It's got a pulley system up at the top. (Might do this one today or tomorrow)

        • Came home today and hit the exercise bike for a half hour. 423 calories. Ow...

But, I stayed in my calorie range, and even managed dessert tonight. Doing good, feeling good, getting there.

          Keep it up, everyone!!

          • Had another session with the trainer last night and boy am I feeling it this morning. Note to self - Dont go to the gym when your in a bad mood. I pushed to hard and am suffering the consequences.

I also need to reign in my food. Have been really slack the last couple of weeks and it's showing on the scales. Hubby and I are going to Tasmanina in 5 weeks and I am determined to lose 5kg before we go.

On the up side, I have the Mothers Day Classic on Sunday to look forward too. This is my first serious training run for the City2Surf in August.

            • Did some HRider today. I noticed something this week, though- my hips aren't hurting like they were a week ago. Same with my knees. This pleases me.

              • Started back at Tae Kwon Do tonight! Just got back from what was a good class.

Warm up was a little tough . . . lost some endurance with my enforced vacation. But the ankle held up fine, no issues with pain even during kicking drills. Practice on my one step sparring went well.

I'm still hoping to test end of the month though I'm not entirely sure the headmaster will let me having missed so much class. We'll see.

I'm icing my ankle as we speak, and I'll use the anti inflammatory cream my doctor gave me tonight and see how the ankle is tomorrow. If it's the same as it was when I woke up this morning, I'll consider whether or not to go to the Friday class or skip until Saturday.

Weigh in was today. Gained two pounds from last week, but I think a lot of that is water weight and I'll lose it by the end of next week.

Blood pressure 118/78, getting back to normal.

                • I ate and drank too much in celebration of finals ending. The weight will be gone before school starts again (in 2 weeks ).

I'm riding my bike now that school is over, I'm taking a yoga class and I'm still running 3 times a week. Today during my run I tripped and scraped up one knee and the palms of my hands. Owwwww.

                  • Been hitting the work gym everyday this week...and I found I love the elliptical!
                    Crazy, I know.

Was supposed to hike Bear Mtn tomorrow, but it's gonna rain . Really bummed about that, Mt Washington is in just a few weeks!

Though, if we don't hike tomorrow, mayhaps we'll go to the revs game? Now I don't know which to wish for!

                    • Ankle's a little sore this afternoon . . . nothing worrisome, but I'm not going to overdo it by going to TKD tonight. There's a class on Saturdays, I'll go tomorrow.

                      • Yesterday I bought a bicycle. This is the first new bike I've ever owned, and the first time I've had or ridden a bike in about 5 years. So I went out on a short "get to know you" ride. I went along my usual walking path, not realizing that one section is actually a hill. It's such a gentle decent you don't realize you are going up or down when you are walking. About halfway back up the hill I got horrible muscle pains in my thighs, since i had not ridden a bike in half a decade. I had to stop and start a lot, but I rode the bike the whole way. I never once got off and walked it.

Today, with my legs feeling better, I chose to go on my second excursion on my new bike. I had barely got out of my driveway when I realized my glutes really hurt. I bike for another 100 meters or so, but the pain was too much to keep biking, so I turned back home.

I took an extra long walk to make up, about 5km.

Anyway, does anyone have any advice on how I can get my bum to stop hurting so I can ride my bike some more?

I really want to continue working towards getting healthier with all of you.

                        • I'm not sure if it affects people's advice, but I'd like to say that riding yesterday I was totally comfortable seatwise. It's just today my bum hurts. So maybe it is the seat, or maybe I hurt the muscle. Anyway, thanks for the advice so far patiokitty.

                          • I skipped my planned TKD session today to go with EE to see Thor. Kick ass movie, totally worth it

Re wool seats: we use sheepskin, with the wool side, to reduce friction and prevent skin break down in patients who have mobility issues.

Probably your bum hurts because the bike seat put pressure in places it is not used to, even as you used muscles in the area which got more of a workout than planned. I sympathize; I had a similar issue when I bought a new bike around this time last year. I went from a frequent bike rider to not riding at all for four years after I left California, and had a hard time dealing with how out of shape I was.

Just keep at it is the best suggestion I have; once you build up some muscle mass it will get better.

The type of seat you are using might be making a difference. I use a gel seat as I find that to be most comfortable for me. You might try a bike shop and experiment with different seats on their floor models to find one you like.

Got the hiking bug back big time....which is great, since I have a large REI dividend to spend.

                              • Did some TT today (that's Total Trainer, btw). I did both arms and legs today, despite the fact that my arm is still killing me for some reason. Not sure if I need to get my arm looked at or just keep trying to stretch it out. It alternates between a dull ache and 'OhGodithurtssobadIcan'thardlymoveit'. Right now? It's somewhere in between.

On top of doing the TT and the HR (Health Rider), I'm watching more what I eat. I've all-but given up bread in favor of tortillas, am eating more vegetables (luckily I'm already a broccoli and spinach fanatic as it is), and am cutting down on sugar.
