Bah, I still think interviewers ask questions like that because they don't know what else to say or how to choose between several suitable candidates. Even a problem I've never come across before at work is going to have some relation to the work I do, therefore I'll have some kind of basis for coming up with a solution. Asking me something completely outside the realms of possibility moves the whole thing into the fantastic and seems pointless.
