She looks like she is going to pass just east of Virginia Beach. Some strong squalls are moving over Delaware now and may go into the DC area - stay safe Severen.

South Jersey is getting hit hard as well. Some of the lighter bands are now moving into northern Jersey, Long Island, and Connecticut.

Another light band is about to hit Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard.

Despite what's going on, it's been fascinating to watch the radar and satellite images over the past few days.

And of course with my luck, I get sick. Have a headache and slightly ill to my stomach. Fun!

My poor lonely beer will be unconsumed.

Rumor says it won't hit here until 8 PM tomorrow. Hey, I can watch Doctor Who tonight after all!

        TiVo, TiVo, TiVo...

On another note can someone please explain to me what the HELL the Red Sox are doing playing baseball right now? It's pouring in Boston. Do they think it's going to blow over?

She just went back into the ocean near the NC / VA border. NYC is getting hammered now along with most of NJ. Squalls are moving though southern New England now, too.

          She's moving very slowly, too.

          South Jersey area tomorrow morning.

Centered near Hartford CT tomorrow afternoon.

Again, Ben, you're awesome. I started re-watching Who. I remember why I loved Doc 9.

When my headache is gone, I'll play some WoW. Playing some Words With Friends (if anyone wants to play, PM me...I am hooked on this game)

Last I heard, her pressure is still low for a Cat 1. Crazy girl.

Not to be unpleasant, but most of the buildings here are made of brick, and the entire region is sitting on a granite plate. As that 4.5 in upstate New York taught us all a few years ago, even a minor quake makes the whole thing ring like a gong. Let's not forget that "measly" managed to break the Washington Monument. And it happened to millions of people who had never felt any quake before, much less a 5.9. Does that mean we can laugh at California's 6.7?
Yes, you can laugh at Californians any time you want. And Los Angelenos any time it rains, as they just have no idea how to deal with it or drive in it. Yes, I'm serious.

As for "measly," I was referring to the attitude of Californians, not my attitude. I've never really felt an earthquake, and I'd probably be freaked if I did.

I spent about a year sneering at people in the South who freaked the fuck out every time there was even a threat of a little bit of snow sometime in the week maybe, until someone pointed out the obvious: These people didn't get much snow.
Since you have been the mocker, you understand how people get that way. If you are jaded to a certain weather or phenomenon, when you see people freaking out over it, you tend to chuckle to yourself about it. So while you can know that the event is actually major to those people (or even in general), that doesn't mean you don't find it amusing.

              Ivan and Katrina were "nothing"?
I don't believe I ever said either one was nothing, but if I did say that, or even implied it, it was merely in reference to how they were in regards to Key West.

Ivan was coming right at us, and then at the last moment, turned towards Texas, leaving us unscathed. Katrina blew through Fort Lauderdale and then the Keys before heading towards New Orleans, but when it was in Florida, it was just a Cat 1, not the beast it became later.

...it wouldn't even have been powerful enough to keep people in Key West out of the bars.
Very few things in existence are.

Unfortunately, I can't be at a hurricane party. I have to work that night.
Oftentimes when hurricanes come through here, many businesses, even bars, close. Of course, not ALL the bars close, which is why we all eventually end up at the ones that don't.

New Haven's still just damp. Naught but rain so far, though we're supposed to be getting the big stuff overnight/tomorrow morning, to the point where the mayor's office sent out the notice that they highly discourage driving tomorrow.

Hubby and I are rather chill about it. He's been through Texas hurricanes before, and we're both quite prepared. We've always got food storage in the house for whatever reason (usually in case we get snowed in up here), we've got plenty of water, candles, flashlight, blankets, etc. Now we're just waiting for Irene to arrive.

Been raining for the last several hours. Getting windier. I closed my bedroom windows a couple hours ago because the sills were starting to get wet, and we just closed the sliding glass door in the living room a little bit ago cuz my roommate was sitting 5 feet away, and not even directly in front of it, and was getting wet. The kitchen window is still open (there's a fan in that window). The fan is not on but it still managed to blow out one of the pilot lights on the stove.

And Mayor Bloomberg just forgot the hurricane's name...and he should really have someone else read the Spanish part...
They're no longer urging people to evacuate, and saying if you didn't do it it's too late, and you should stay away from windows, etc.

My roommate just showed me a pic on facebook that someone posted of the water in Wildwood...up to the boardwalk...which is a fair distance from the normal water line...

And some idiots went kayaking off Staten Island(?), capsized, and so risked the lives of the people who had to rescue them as well.

I agree that it's not what hits so much as where it hits.

The recent earthquake is a prime example. The east coast isn't accustomed to shaking at all, and when it does, the whole damn coast starts vibrating due to the solid bedrock under us. Even light snow can cripple the south because our infrastructure can't handle it, our climate turns a good snow into impassible black ice on the streets, and face it...we don't know how to drive in it.

Weird weather and other phenomenon that hits an area that doesn't usually have to deal with that particular is going to cause real problems for the folks that live there.

Rain, wind, a few rumbles of thunder in Branford.
Feeling better now, that was an annoying headache I had.

Part of CT had mandatory evacuation orders, but I think that was mostly senior housings.

Cats are puzzled I have been home all day, ha.

Boss is expecting to open the store tomorrow.

Considering Irene is expected to come *straight* at us (near Albany), I think he'll change his tune in the morning.

I hope the coastal cities are alright... and like I heard elsewhere, it's not the wind, but the water that gets you (and the infrastructure). I have visions of New Yorkers accidentally drinking saltwater. bleh. Glad I'm only in danger of a super-volcano that will wipe out everything from the Great Divide west.
