I actually have a story bit where there's some embarrassment based on name/gender confusion. Person going for an interview thinks they're meeting someone named Don and does something witnessed by a woman in the elevator and learns that the interviewer is actually named Dawn. It gets a little awkward after that.

As for the dental stuff, you might look into finding a local dental teaching facility. While you have to put up with having students work on you, you get massively reduced prices.

Not for this sort of thing. I'd do a school for basic cleaning, but the tooth is fucked up enough that it might have to come out completely (granted, I'm no dentist but the missing piece is a BIG chunk, and who knows how long it's been messed up? I have bad teeth.) I want a pro for that, especially since I don't handle pain well At All. (I had to be put to sleep when I had my extractions done in December and you'll never know how glad I am that I was out for all of that.)

Wasn't there a Seinfeld episode where a white woman had the last name Chang? They found out her name was Changstein and she changed it to Chang to mess with people. So having a Japanese name would at least let you mess with people with no effort.

We had some family pics taken by a lady with the last name Foxborough. I thought that was cool.

Edit: as a teen I had extensive dental work (braces for 6 years and other stuff- I have a congenital condition that causes my enamel to be pitted and scarred, causing all sorts of problems). They were completely fine. The students have teachers looking over their shoulders and who always check their work afterward. I wouldn't worry about that part at all, I'm sure dental school can handle anything you throw at them.

Yes, she was Asian. Yes, her last name was Jewish. I am guessing it was from adoption, but who knows? More importantly, who cares? No one seemed to give her too much shit about it. Actually, she seemed rather popular.

IMO - put something that BOTH makes you smile and feel "you" BUT something that doesn't make you stick out like a sore thumb. My reasoning there is if you don't want people finding you, you don't give them a ticket.

On the one hand, I've always been a huge fan of self-expression, and I'm certainly no stranger to it. It takes less energy to be yourself than it does to suppress parts of yourself that you know others would find unacceptable. And it's more fun.

OTOH, if you're in somewhat of a precarious situation (as I am), rocking the boat either has to be done with extreme caution, or not attempted at all. And, if you have bullying scars (like I do), over time it becomes second nature to guard yourself first and foremost. (I have to agree with Der Cute on that count.)

Granted, a name change is relatively low on the list of eye-popping things. But, old habits die hard.

I know you didn't imply that; however it is something I've noticed - not necessarily when it's applicable to me - whenever the subject of personal doom has come up elsewhere in other online circles that I run, and I wanted to address that.

I have a good friend whose name is Renee. Ironically, she dislikes it almost as much as I dislike my name (which, interestingly, you DID list! But I'm not sayin' which one it is. ).

Sounds almost similar to mine, at least in this particular area. I have random cousins and other relative flotsam floating around that I couldn't even tell you who they are - all I know is that they're forked from my dad's side of the family. (Dad was/is a country boy.) It always annoyed me because I'd constantly get asked by strangers if I was related to so-and-so. Nope, sorry, don't know 'em - as far as I'm concerned they're blood on paper only; otherwise, they just don't exist to me. Nothing personal, it's just that it's harder for me to feel 'connected' to somebody that I've never even met and wouldn't know on the street from Adam.

See, mine's the opposite: changing my last name would actually BENEFIT me to that degree. Not that I have any stalker exes (I don't, thankfully). You have a point about having "X" name making you stick out a bit. Could it be regional? And odd enough to stick out? Something as common as Jones or Black or Smith would be ok with me; really really blend into the woodwork. That's what I want.

Crawford. As long as you're not blonde, like Joan; you might be asked if you're related. I like Stuart, but Johnson and Simpson, Edwards, Erickson...more common than others.

I've got a story for you about names.
Someone I know is from Egypt. You can tell; skin, face, accent. He's Egyptian. His first name is Aladdin. Here we call him Alan. He came to America due to wars and home problems. He got here, and was having problems finding jobs due to his name. He couldn't figure out what to have his alias/name. He saw a can of beer, and said, ok, that's my name. Alan Miller.
After he started using that, he got jobs. He would show up, and get wtf looks from the management, but did his job and did good. A name really does make a difference.

For last names I like Manderley, Tully, Selmy, Swann and Greyjoy. Some of his nifty first names for women are Sansa, Arya, Daenerys, Lysa and Lyanna.
