  • Extinguishing candles without smoke

So you blow a candle out and it smokes. If you dislike the smell or smoke try this instead...

Extinguish the candle by curling the wick over to dip it into the wax. Then pull the wick back up.

The flame is out and there is no smoke.

Of course be careful how you handle the lit wick - the lady telling me this trick said to use scissors to handle it. Personally i don't always have scissors on hand so for some candles such as the jar-types i just shake the candle slightly to get the wax to slosh up over the flame. same effect.

but of course be careful with fire.

I have almost exclusively candles in jars. I just pop the lid back on and it smothers without smoking up the room.

I actually let them smoke a bit, because I found they only permeate the scent when they aren't lit and the cover is off, or when you blow them out.

The alternative technique is to blow it out, then wet fingers and pinch it to stop it smouldering. This leaves a small amount of smoke but doesn't require any tools.

Or you can be juvenile about it and pinch the wick when it's still on fire

Yes, I'm still a little kid when it comes to playing with fire. A dumb little kid.

Next Sunday (when the GF lights everything up for advent) I'm going to try the submerging the wick thing (I have plenty of pairs of needle nose pliers around).
