  • Vitamin help?

To clarify, I DID ask Raps beforehand if I could post this, he said it was fine as it's NOT relating to actual medication, only to multivitamins. So please don't bug the mods saying that the post is a problem...they're already aware of it.

So at the moment I am contemplating the idea of adding a fish oil capsule and I have already added a stress relief tablet to my diet to see if that will help abate my symptoms, as at the moment, my symptoms are more commonly reflecting those of chronic stress, as opposed to a "mixed state."

The question I was wanting to ask was whether anyone has done the same (or similar) things and if there has been an improvement?

*The stress relief tablet that I am taking at the moment is a mix of B-group vitamins, plus a couple of extra herbs. I did check with the chemist before I took these because of my Implanon.

Well, it can't hurt. There are benefits for a number of conditions and only seemingly a couple negatives, mainly one of a rare effect of mania in bipolars, and some brands may have PCB concentrations.

Cheers. I am going for the odourless fish oil tablets if I can, given that the current stress relief tablets smell HORRIBLE. I don't need to smell like I work in an aquarium.

And before anyone points out the doctor issue, I am due to go back to the doctors in about 4 weeks for her to decide whether I end up with increased hunger or weight gain. In short, I am not looking forward to said visit. This is more of a "let's see if I can do this without needing to rely on medication and making the right choices this time" thing.

I take a krill based brand that have the shell flavored very strongly with vanilla. Provided it doesn't get stuck partway down and dissolve in the throat, I don't even burp fishy. My cardiologist recommended these specifically.

I haven't taken vitamins for stress, but I have taken one of the B vitamins for carpal tunnel. I can't remember if it was -6 or -12, but one of them has anti-inflammatory properties and did lessen my symptoms. By far. I'm guessing stress=inflammation.

I haven't tried fish oil in the huge pile of supplements I take. Mine include garlic for antibiotic properties, apple cider vinegar, general vitamin, potassium, vitamin d, and calcium.

you might want to ask your physician about other supplements as well, instead of, or in connection with other treatment, complimentary medicine is a growing field in some areas. I was advised to take certain supplements to aid with my depression and anxiety because I react badly to pharmaceuticals. 5HTP is one of them.

I take fish oil, just the cheapest kind I can find, and I never burp "fishy." Never taste a think or notice a smell (but maybe that's why my cats love me?). I absent-mindedly bit one once. Don't. Don't do that. Ever. Yuk.

I don't know what all other benefits I'm having, but I think my skin is less dry.

I second everyone else. Couldn't hurt.

I know a friend of mine's eye Dr told her to get the gel-cap fish oil, and keep it in the freezer - no fish flavor!

OK, so I wound up buying two supplements yesterday: one is another anti-stress pill for when I'm not at uni (and doesn't smell as foul when you open the bottle) and the other is the fish oil. I've got the softgel ones and they're marketed as "true odourless" so I'll see how I go.

I am not a fan of most nutritional supplements. There is very little evidence that they do any good at all, some are harmful or interfere with other medications, and they are all expensive.

Fish oil is probably beneficial and more physicians are recommending it. But you have to be careful about mercury levels in some of them; the kinds of fish that we get the fish oil from tends to have high levels of mercury.

Personally, I prefer to get my Omega 3's from food.

To address both of your points (they do make sense tho)

                        1) I did double-check to ensure that they won't interfere with the Implanon (which is why I checked to make sure they don't contain St Johns Wort). I tried to avoid the ones containing Withania where possible though. And they are all expensive, you're right, although the fish oil that I picked up was on special. (not the clearance type special)

                        2) I also checked for that too: the brand that I bought has been tested for mercury (I went for the odourless ones). The level is negligible.

Those don't necessarily apply in Australia, although most of the brands that are sold over here seem to be Australian in origin anyway: Nature's Own, nature's Way, Blackmores, Swisse and Cenovis are the ones I can remember off the top of my head. I currently take Blackmores Executive Stress formula 2x a day and I'm going to start fish oil soon.

with the exception of the biotin everything was recommended to me by various doctors. Other than my primary care physician, my doctors are also teaching staff at Yale.
