  • Anybody ever used MyMathLab online?

I'm doing school online this semester due to my life currently demanding extreme flexibility. My Calculus course requires, officially, the purchase of a textbook that comes with an access code for MyMathLab.com. According to my instructor, I don't even need the print book, just the online access, because the entire course content including the textbook, is available online through that site.

My big question for anyone who's ever used that website is, did I understand my instructor right? Is that really a whole online-classroom environment, with the homework, lecture materials, quizzes and everything? Is it possible to learn the material from the site, without having a print copy of the textbook in your lap? Would you go insane if you had to use the site, with no print copy of the book, on a 10" netbook screen?

Or would it be smarter to suck it up, pay the extra $8, and get a print copy of the book also? I know, I'm whining about all of eight bucks, but you know how it is, that's $8 I could spend on silly things like food and rent!

Yes, everything is on the website. However, I preferred to have the book, too, because I don't want to have to have the internet in order to read material or to do homework problems. I only used the website for our weekly quizzes that we had to do, but I know a lot of my classmates just used the website for everything and didn't buy the actual textbook.
    Don't wanna; not gonna.

If it is only $8 then I say get the paper textbook. For me it made a big difference to be able to scribble notes and solutions in the book. Math is one of those things (for me) that I have to have a tactile connection to to "get it".
      BTW $8?! I'm so jealous!

I have used that program and YES get the book. It makes working on some of the problems soooo much easier if you are having a problem with one.

I used that for several classes. I'd suggest getting the print book because I remember having trouble getting to the book during the practice problems and I like having the book as a reference when I get stuck. It's been a few years, though.

Actually $7.13. While I was reading everyone's responses (thank you!!) a still-cheaper copy of my edition was added to Amazon's used choices. I still have to pay some high figure for the online portion, but the printed book at least was cheap enough to make me feel better about that. Which is good because I'm pretty sure GracieCat's already made plans to shred the cover. Between her and my coffee, I never get to sell books back.

Thanks for the input; I really did just need to hear from others who've been there, done that. Last time I was in the college's distance learning program, it involved a big packet of papers, and a book of stamps... I'm just a little wound-up about this online stuff. Can't wait to start the semester and be done with this nervousness.

Yes. (In my defense, it's 4 am here. ) Figured it was some 'Breaking Bad' tie-in game.

@Maria: Glad you got the info you needed, and good luck with school, hope it goes great for you!

I was just coming in here to post that same thing.

In my defense, it's still early morning, and I'm not completely awake, yet.

Frankly, I'd say to pay the extra $8 and get the textbook
Plus, it's extra insurance in case your power goes out, or if something happens and you can't get online.

Yes. That's the first thing I thought of actually.

My cat shreded chapter 5 of my $250+ accounting book by riding it off the table (jumped up and didn't realize there was a book there - clawed in but still fell off the table). The other cat managed to run across the keyboard just as I was starting a quiz - managed to answer a few questions (incorrectly) and hit submit. Luckily, the instructor was online and reset it for me after I explained what happened (presumably after laughing her head off).

                        ...

And autiem, just ouch. A $250 book?? Good grief! I'm so relieved that my cat isn't the only one, though. Mine is a bottle-raised, mostly blind vegan part-bobcat with an affinity for Scottish music, so I kind of assumed it was just another example of the furry neurosis that is this misnamed cat. But maybe it's the one thing she does that's normal, instead! I've turned in more than a couple of hand-out assignments with werewolf-slashes through them, but I hadn't even thought about her "helping" me type. I'll have to be watchful for that trick.
