A guy brings up a small map of the city and asks me to help him out.
SC: The directions aren't labeled. Where is north on the map?

The map is aligned so that if you can read the text, north is at the top of the map. You know, just like every map in existance.

I indicate where north and south are on the map.

SC: Can you also point out which direction is east and west?

Arlington, VA, has a rectangular shape, and is set at a 45 degree angle. The map of Arlington is aligned with the paper with NW at the top of the map and N being toward the upper right corner.

And I'm sure all of our members in Australia are familiar with McArthur's Universal Corrective Map of the World.

*raises her hand* Though, they're usually for D&D campaigns in worlds where North, South, East, and West bear no resemblance to the world they take place on.
Not to mention, I don't believe in that setup, for lack of a better word.

if i see a normal map of my city i have a hard time reading it im use to west being up east being down north being sideways with south.
i like the upside down maps btw

wow, that map is just... well... it looks so strange.

Oh, and in Salt Lake if someone can't figure out North from South, East from West needs to be steralized to prevent them from breeding. Considering the streets are numbered by distance North, South, East, or West from Temple Square... ie, one block south of Temple Square is 100 south, two blocks south is 200 south, 21 blocks south is 2100 south, etc. One block north is 100 North, two blocks is 200 North, etc. Same thing with east and west... if the numbers are going up you are going that direction... if they are going down you are going the opposite of that direction.

The problem with those upside down maps is that they still erpresent true bearings for navigation rather than the actual land masses involved.

I am directionally disabled (can't find my way out of a papersack) but I can read a map. I wonder how long this guy's family has been missing him.

To be fair, not every map has north at the top.

I've seen a few cities like that, especially in Japan, where the top of the map points to some specific area, or where the city layout itself is at an angle, so they print it out with the layout aligned, but north off to the side or something like that.
