OK, so yesterday a guest set their microwave on fire... thank God no damage was done to the room (or really the microwave for that matter, we got it put out right quick)... no one was hurt... but it did lead to a lot of brain burps.
First off... the idiot who caught his microwave on fire did so by accidentally setting the timer for his popcorn for something like 20 minutes instead of 2... then left the room rather than being close to the microwave, you know like all bags tell you to do...
Anyway, the hotel policy is whenever the fire alarm goes off to as soon as possible silence the alarm and go verify the emergency and if it is an emergency that requires the hotel be evacuated to reactivate the alarm. We do this because 99% of the time it will be because of some idiot smoking in the room or burning popcorn... and the 1% that it is legit, our alarm system is sensitive enough that it gives us enough advance warning that we can easily verify the threat and restart the alarm with time to spare to evacuate the hotel. Also we are to, if it is safe to do so go room by room telling people to get out as well as restarting the alarm... if it is not safe to do so grab the bucket and cordless phone, call each room telling people to get out and mark the rooms that don't answer to give to the fire department for first priority to check (or any room who answered but said they couldn't get out).
That was a really long explanation to get to the stupid question... I got no less than 10 calls asking if they had to evacuate... now let's think about this... I'm calmly answering the phone... INSIDE the hotel... yes, please evacuate... I'm not going to but by all means, feel free to evacuate... morons... do they honestly believe that I'm the noble type who will stay at my post as the building burns around me... if they do, they must be really naive... there is no way in hell I'm going to risk my life staying in a burning building for $9.25 an hour, or at least I'm not calmly staying at the desk... I may be willing to risk myself to help others, but not to man the desk.
