  • Why We Have Signs

Ok, this is my first post here, and it's an old story that still makes me shake my head and ask of the gods "WTF?"

At the time, I was working in a department store, and like all department stores, hanging from the roof are signs above each section, letting you know what is where. Not only that, but at the very front of the store was our clothes section, visible from outside of the doors, and through a glass display window.

So, I'm standing at the door, acting as the store greeter, and this lady walks straight up to me and asks "Where can I find ladies clothing?"

I just looked at her, blinked for a moment, and then said "Ugh, right there," and pointed to the section directly in front of her. The only way she could have missed it was if she had have walked into the store with her eyes closed.

Seriously, a major section like that isn't hard to find if you actually look at what's right in front of you.

Welcome to the forum! I'm glad you've learned the first rule of retail: People don't read signs. :-P

Or pay attention to their surroundings. Or notice that we're not robots.

Yeah, a lot of customers will immediately walk up to the first employee they see and ask where such and such is, without even bothering to look around for it first.

It's even worse when they stand in the middle of the department they are trying to locate and ask you where it is.

If by even worse you mean hilarious! I was noticing all of the signs in our store, I don't blame people anymore for asking about stuff, there is so much crap on the walls and counters and windows, the only reason I read it is I have to kill several hours of my shift and i might as well brush up on some reading.
I'm sorry reading is not a new concept it has been widely taught in our nation for at least the past 100 years. Please, learn to do it CORRECTLY before you become contagious.
