  • Some People Just Can't Handle Change...

    Ugh. I nearly did a in front of a customer today. Lady came in, I rang her up, everything seemed normal, until...

    Cigarette Lady (CL from now on): **pulls pack of Marb lights from her purse, which happen to be in the new packaging that says Gold Box instead of Lights** Oh, and I was wondering if I could exchange these? They don't say lights.
    ME: **after I recover from a few seconds of brain malfunction at her question** Well, ma'am, they are the same thing--
    CL: But they don't say 'Lights'!
    ME: That's because they can't. It's a federal thing now that cigarettes can't say 'light' or 'ultra-light' anymore. These are lights though, they just had to change the packaging.
    CL: **blinks** Oh...But, they don't say lights...You swear they're lights?
    ME: Yes. They just had to change the packaging.
    CL: But you promise they're lights? **winks at me**
    ME: **momentarily creeped out by a woman winking at me** yes, I promise. Like I said, it's a Federal thing that they had to--
    CL: Okay, alright. Well, thank you. **puts cigs back in purse and toddles happily out of the store**
    ME: **looks at co-worker L on second till** Seriously?
    L: Wow. Do we even carry that packaging?
    ME: Not on that style, yet.
    L: Then she couldn't have exchanged them anyway.
    ME: Exactly.

    **sigh** This is actually the first customer I'd had raise a stink over it, and it wasn't even a pack of smokes that I sold to her! OMG! They changed the packaging! These can't be right! Ohhh noooeeees!! Hey, I understand some people have issues with change, but I promise, your cigs are still the same ones you've been smoking for umpteen years. It'll be okay. I PROMISE!

    Get use to it. Most of the cigarettes we have in stock now have been changed over. So I get this all day long.

    I love when they stand there and insist that they changed the cigarette too.

      If it says lights on the box then you can smoke all you want and be perfectly healthy. If it doesn't.. well..

      I smoke 72's occasionally. If I'm going to smoke, I want to feel like I've smoked.

        Ugh, I found out from my AM yesterday that she COULD have exchanged the cigs, provided they had an Iowa tax stamp on them. Sorry, not exchanging because of customer stupidity/ignorance!

          We just started getting the new packaging in so it hasn't been too bad yet. I had one lady come back and say I gave her the wrong ones but that was an "Oh yeah, the changed nevermind" thing. One lady swore this one place sold her ones called Silver and they tasted horrible, I didn't even bother with that one there was no arguing with her. Good thing we still had Ultra Lights to sell her.

          Then my very most favorite. One night I answer the phone and it sounds like this old guy on the line asking if we had menthol lights or ultra lights (I forget now, just not the full flavor ones). I look and we do under the new packaging. A little while later a lady and I guess her son come in to buy a carton of earlier asked for cigarettes. Ooh, nooo! That carton wasn't good enough because it didn't have the proper wording! They were buying the cigarettes for the old guy that called earlier. I admit I did get kind of snippy saying all the packaging was changing and the people weren't really snotty about it but they made a bigger deal out of it that it was. They just said they'd get them at another store.

          So far it seems that hopefully most people are grasping the concept that it's changed.
          I would have a nice day, but I have other things to do.

            That was in understandable. Camel Silvers are NOT light cigs in the normal sense. They are light with a different blend of tabacco of the turkish blend. (Along with the Gold, Royal etc.). So I can see if she is used to ultra light camels, then yeah, Silvers would be gross. Very few customers liked the Silvers.

            In anycase, we phased out of those a while back. People did make a nitshit, but shocking enough, when I explained to them about that, they all belived me.

            It was on of the rare times where every customer took my word for it.

            I could tell them that x beer is out, and they would demand I go in the back to get more. I could tell them we no longer sell B candy, and they demand I'd order more.

            But the whole no longer calling them lights due to health, they all belived me.

              Is it sad that when I saw the thread title, I automatically thought it was going to be about coins?

                LOL, Pagan, I knew someone was going to make the change = coins association! As for my original topic, I had to explain to someone again today about the change. she wanted Virginia Slims Ultra Lights. I don't think we had them...We had silvers but the lights we had that were labeled lights had silver on them. I had to tell her about the change, but she was cool with it. I don't know, with some of the cigarette brands, this could get confusing!

                  Virginia Slims Ultra Lights = Silver
                  Virginia Slims Lights = Gold

                  Most have went with....
                  Regular = Red
                  Lights = Gold
                  Ultra Lights = Silver
                  Menthol = Green

                  Except Pall Mall their Ultra Lights are Orange.
                  And Sonoma removed all wording off the packs and cartons. You have to go by the package color.

                  Since I brought up Sonoma... Why can't people get that name right?
                  They have called them tsunami, sonami, sunocos, etc... I mean theres a TRUCK called Sonoma...
                  So guy kept messing the name up and my one co-worker got tired of correcting him. He finally asked the guy what type of truck he drove... He said a GMC Sonoma... My co-worker then asked him why he had a hard time remembering they are Sonomas and not sonamis?

                  He didn't have an answer just told my co-worker to stop being a smartass. LOL

                  And Liggett's are ligaments, etc...

                    **facepalm** Then we had the lady's cigs and I didn't realize it! Ugh! Well, I guess, if it's any consolation, this is going to take us clerks a while to get used to as well!

                      I actually loved Turkish Silvers. :P Smoked them for a while before I upgraded to Turkish Royals.

                      Which is, of course, a kind that is totally unavailable in Australia. FML.

                        I only recently noticed that the "lights" had been removed from the packaging. I still ask for lights out of habit, even tho they are now called blue. The packaging looks identical, except for the removal of that one word.
