My mom grew up in Florida. There was a band of gypsies that lived close to her house. They had a 5-legged cow, which fascinated my mom and siblings.

Fun part of all that is that technically the term "gypsie" is racist against Egyptians.

From what I have heard (although not in person) the preferred term is Rom. *shrug*

The Gabors clan is Rom, and we have a group of them (and both groups appear to support all of the stereotypes) that sell product to us. We keep a close eye on the ones we buy from because we once bought a box of product that turned out to contain some of our own stuff. We can't be completely certain we didn't sell it to them or someone else prior to it being sold back to us, but the likelihood is very, very low.

The Romani were mistakenly called "gypsies" or "gyptians" by medieval Europeans because they thought the Romani originated in Egypt.

The other major transient group is the Irish Travellers.

The two groups are often confused with each other.
