  • I'm gonna get an ass-chewing...

...probably today. My first solo closing and I screwed up. I managed all closing duties except the actual drawer count and deposit.

There was an event downstairs as well right up until I was supposed to be out of there, and the coworker running the event was using the DB at the same time I was trying to do ending processing (big no-no...EOP will fail spectacularly if anyone else is using it; he didn't tell me it was still in use).*

We managed to somehow salvage that (however a printer issue resulted in my only being able to locate one page; the other two are probably down there somewhere), at which time it was 20 minutes after I was supposed to have clocked out and I was in danger of missing my train. The store A/C is broken, and at that point I also had a massive headache from the heat and my brain was just not working (90F outside all day; the downstairs event space was a comfy 75 but I don't want to know what upstairs was...I do know I fielded a number of complaints about the heat)

I did count the drawer and it balanced with the sheet, but I didn't have time to actually prepare the deposit. This is totally my fault, and I realize that. I meant to leave a note explaining the sitch, but that brainstorm came a second after the back door locked on me and I still don't have keys.

    * we really need some sort of intercom system between the two floors...

The owner will tolerate mistakes but not active malice. Hopefully I can explain that it was a screwup and it will not happen again (at least, not if this coworker makes some effort to help out with closing). I'm usually pretty on the ball, but I do blame the heat for part of this one.

    Seriously?

...you don't deserve an ass-chewing for that. That was not active malice in the least. Certain situations arose right at closing, and it caused you to be late, almost missing your train. It's totally understandable.

I absolutely HATE closing. I'm by myself, and since I am in a mall kiosk, (and customers are idiots), I can have customers come up to me WAY past closing. When that happens, It makes me very late getting out of there because I still have to do the nightly deposit and paperwork. Add to that, half the time our shit doesn't work properly, (computer programs wherein we post our deposits...), I can be up to 2 hours late getting out of there. Screw THAT. I leave it. If our systems get screwed up and it's not posting correctly, I certainly won't wait around for it to decide to work. (and, yes, the a/c in the mall isn't the greatest, so I'm kinda bitchy when nothing works and I'm sweltering in the heat). I always call my supervisor and tell him "I didn't get the paperwork or the deposits done..." He understands and says "That's ok..we'll do it tomorrow, dont' worry about it." I love him.

So, if you get an ass chewing...tell HIM to go and close from now on. Or, have him come and pick you up because you've missed your train to get everything done.
Oh, "Blah blah blah 'Your Needs'!"

Turns out all is well, I made sure to call the owner the next morning (yesterday) to let him know I hadn't prepped the deposit. No news from him yet, so there shouldn't be at all.

I guess i was freaking out a bit mainly due to the fact that when handling large amounts of cash I want to make sure it's secure before I leave (which I couldn't do due to the lack of AC making me sick and not able to think--it's almost August and the store has no air conditioning?! WTF is going on here? You've known it's been broken since May!).

Most of the problem on Friday night was the other guy who was in the DB without telling me (and opened a second reg down there without telling me until the upstairs drawer came up really short, and rang a couple friends through on the upstairs reg after the EOD had been processed--sucky coworker there methinks). I realize he's volunteering for this game night (he did used to work there), but could he not at least help out when we both need to be out of there by a certain time? When I applied, I didn't even realize I was going to be closing the store (I don't really like hanging around the area after dark anyway, and after sunset the subway seems to get less reliable).

Gah, Thursday nights were much saner and I could get out of there when he said I was supposed to be out of there. Fridays gets all the rabid Magic players...

Apparently, the count sheets and CC report I ran are "missing" (gee, it took the owner until Monday to notice this?). I know where I put them; granted I did break procedure and not put them downstairs, but I had a huge headache by that point and could not think.

It was either put them where I did (the person who recounted the drawer on Saturday should have found them), or take them home with me which, while more secure than leaving them there, I do not think would have gone over well.
