  • My first day as assistant manager on my own

so I recently started work at a new job as an assistant manager in a store in an outlet mall. Today was my first official day working as the manager on duty. What a day THAT was. First thing I had to do was test the alarm system (which hasnt been done yet because corporate forgot to tell us we had to do it once per quarter) and we find out that our front doors, motion sensors, and stock room door dont communicate with the alarm company....only the back delivery door does. SO...I got to schedule an appointment for them to come out and repair that.

NEXT, I had to do payroll. As I was working on payroll, the keyholder (another manager a step below assistant) kept coming around trying to see what everyone gets paid. I finally had to put it away in the filing cabinet which only myself and the store manager have access to so that she couldnt see what everyone gets paid. I finished payroll later after she left. Looks like I get to talk to the store manager tomorrow.

I also had about 5 other stores in the corporation call and make orders for products which I had and they didnt which I had to process and get ready for shipping. In the meantime the regular associates (employees) took every opportunity to disappear...so I would have to go search and finally find them and tell them to get back out to the sales floor and help customers. I think they were just testing me to see what they could get away.

    Sheesh...what a day......Im exausted

    Been There

And welcome to The Joys Of Management
I got promoted to Asst. Manager a couple of months ago. I am still afraid that they will all figure out that I have no idea what I'm doing. (Remember they can smell fear!) Everyone has those days, the sales associates were most likely testing you. It will take repeated tests, then they will want to know if the boss has your back. Beware of the following complaints:
"Your just doing that because she's your favorite!"
"I should have gotten your job!"
"I'm going to tell the manager on you!"
    "You just don't like me!"
Remember once you get managment you get health benifits, retierment plans, and sick days.
*Bonus*, if you ever have to change jobs you won't have to start at the bottom again.
Consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.

I get health insurance...dental insurance...optical insurance...life insurance...4 weeks of paid time off AND half off of everything in the store.

As far as employees testing me...at least I have the benefit of being new to the store. Im not a former employee promoted into the position.

Please do talk to the manager about that.

Most, if not all, of the places I worked at had it as policy that no one is to know what other employees are making. At some of the places, it was a fireable offense to ask or tell what you're making.

I talked to him about it today and he said he would no longer schedule her on payroll day (even though its her favorite day to work). Hes really serious about payroll.

I hate when people disappear. and I'm a pay grade 1 hourly, only one raise above the store minimum in pay. but that is definitely a perk to being in a store with 5 assistant managers, when you get promoted you have help to establish that you won't let them get away with everything

WM has that policy, but I don't think it's terminable, they just said in orientation "we don't discuss wages", but if you ask people will usually tell you

and seriously, who is going to fire 3 of your 4 courtesy clerks, leaving you with a part time, whiny little bitch?(no jackass, you don't get extra breaks because of blisters, we all went through it, we don't feel sorry for you) as your only courtesy clerk for telling each other what they make and what they got on their evals?
