Good news, we have a cyborg at our work now.

I talked to one of my Co-workers today and confirmed what I long suspected. Awhile ago he left for a week or so and came back with a large scar on the back of his head. Today, my suspisions where confirmed. He was born mostly deaf and now he has a cochlear implant. Everyone is so happy for him. He just got it "turned on" today and is starting to learn how to use it. He will need several months of "tuning" to get it working properly but he is already hearing with it. He is a great guy and I feel so happy for him. He is describing simple things like the crunching of leaves and such that he has never heard before. I just had to share with everyone.

It's amazing how far technology has gone. Being able to give a deaf person the chance to hear even slightly is great.

My cousin, who came over from Israel to visit a whlie ago, also just got his implants done and he's in his twenties. he has to literally re-learn to hear as he grew up, literally, in silence.

So yes, the joy is shared on a GRAND scale over here ^^

I know someone with that implant. A truly amazing device! Medical technology continues to astound me. Honestly, I fully believe that visual implants will be created in the next ten years.

It's great to hear the news (no pun intended, I swear, I just couldn't think of a grammatically correct way to phrase it otherwise.). However, I do have to wonder just how acute his new hearing will become. I'm constantly accidentally sneaking up on people.

There was a story a while back about a blind man who had an implant put into his brain that hooks up to a wearable computer, and a sensor that sits on his glasses. The glasses transmit information directly to his optical nerve into a display that he sees kinda like one of those marquee type LED screends. It's in 2-color, but he can make out things around him now, which was way cool.
