It's really hard not to catch something at my work. I handle tons of money (who knows what people have put on the bills), I work right next to co-workers and if they have something I am bound to catch it.

I caught the stomach flu two weeks ago, was well for one week and now have a cold. It sucks. I already called out for three days two weeks before. I can't do it again.

I agree, going to work sick is crappy and shouldn't be allowed. Hell, I feel guilty going to work. I look like I can lead santa's sleigh with my nose and I try hard not to breathe around any co-workers and I wash my hands a lot. It's gross I feel bad for the customers too. They see me blow my nose and then hand them their change... I wish it was illegal to come to work sick. I don't like infecting others.

At another job I had pink eye and I called out for the third time and was told I had to go in unless I got a doctors note! Pink eye is really gross and severly contagious. Needless to say, I spent a hundred dollars, went to the doctor, got my eye drops and still had to go to work that same day to bring in the doctor's note!

Just to let you know, suspensions like Amoxicillin expire 10 days after they're mixed. You probably wouldn't want to try that again.
I've tried some that are a couple months old and they still work fine. I figured I'd take just three or four day's worth to make the germs weak enough for my immune system to finish them off. For me it's all about saving money. If I could I'd get health insurance but when I look at my household income and see it costs over $500 dollars a month to insure my entire family, the math just doesnt work.

        1. It is a violation of labor laws to make someone work when they are sick.

        2. It is a violation of health codes to ALLOW someone who is sick and possibly contagious to work in food service!

If she makes such a threat again, go ahead and let her write you up -- while you contact your local health department! You may get a demerit on your work record which can be cleared, while she will get fined for endangering the health of all your customers!

The problem with that is that you're contributing to germ resistance to these now pretty inexpensive antibiotics, because you expose them to the med that doesn't kill them off, and they will develop ways around them, making you or someone else have to take something gnarlier in the future to kill off this bacteria.

Besides, if you're just taking it for colds and flus, the amoxicillin isn't doing anything to treat that anyways, as those are viral infections.

Please, toss suspensions like that after the 10 or 14 day shelf life after they're mixed.

          [/ soapbox]

Y'all might not want to do this, but...Tractor Suppy Co. carries Terramycin Soluble for livestock. Here, it costs about $4.50. I mix up a bag to make 24 fluid ounces and take one ounce, three times a day.
I AM NOT A DOCTOR. I CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS.
It tastes nasty, but when I know what I have, and I know this will kick it, it works for me.
Everything will be ok in the end. If it's not ok, it's not the end.

On the same topic, there was a nasty stomach virus going around where I live. This was not your average stomach bug, this was highly contagious. You could get it by being breathed on by someone who had it.

I had been feeling bad all day Christmas Eve. I got home, I was still feeling off, but still good enough to chat with my girlfriend ((no, I didn't give it to her. The one benefit to a long-distance relationship, you can't get the person you love sick. )) and play a role-playing game. But soon after, I had to run to the bathroom. At this point I was thankful, because at least my digestive system wasn't working in reverse (yet). I didn't get a whole lot of sleep because, well, I'm sure you know how it gets.

Christmas, I was laid up in bed. Every half-hour to hour I was running up 1.5 flights of stairs to the bathroom in my parents' house. ((I had gone home for Christmas because at the time I had no internet, TV, nothing.)) Around morning time, my digestive system decided it was a two-way track. Not keeping anything down beyond half a saltine and sucking on ice cubes. I called my boss and, unfortunately, I can't get the day after Christmas off.

(Now some backstory is needed here. On 12/23 the Assistant manager had quit. No notice, he was called in to do his job, and he told the Manager over the phone that he quit.) That left the manager with three employees, one of whom had to work her other job that day, the other one was scheduled to close. So I needed to come in and open, as my Manager wasn't going to be able to come in to open. At least he was very understanding and told me to do what I can to feel better by the next day.

I'm just lucky I bounce back quickly from illness. ((Well, that and I had a literally empty digestive tract after that bout of illness))
