  • Wheeeee! Potential new job for me!

I'm not counting my chickens before they hatch, but I've been invited to an Assessment Session for a job I recently applied for, the fact that that I have gotten to this stage is a promising sign though.

What is the job though, you might ask?

Blackjack dealer at a casino >_>

Decided I wanted to try something a little bit different from what I am used to, go a little out of the 'comfort zone', so to speak. I am tired of cold-calling people asking if they want to take part in opinion polls - I like jobs where I can deal with people face to face - plus the hours at my current job are FAR too unreliable for someone at university, so if I get this job, plus depending on what hours I can get at the job, I will either cut back my hours to the bare minimum or I will simply remove my name from the roster completely - my current workplace knows I am looking for alternate work and are quite happy to give me a good reference since their entire schtick is casual and part time work.

If I am successful, I will have to go through a 5 week (paid) training school which will teach me all I need to know about being a croupier on the gaming floor, after which, once I have had a final test to determine that I know my stuff, I will be allowed to roster for shifts.

    So, fingers crossed!

Well, the interview and maths/literacy assessments were a breeze, I think I gave a good impression to the interviewer... the initial introduction into the training school was a bit rough though - I'm left handed primarily and have not really had much reason to be ambidextrous, so I was having a little trouble with the chips with my right hand - with time and practice I'm sure I'll get the hang of it - the issue is I don't really have a hell of a lot of time - the training school starts in 4 weeks if I am accepted, plus the course itself only goes for 5 weeks, which if we pass, we are guaranteed a job at the casino.

I've seen a left handed dealer and he could scoop up the cards with ease but dealing was a bit slower. He was very engaging tho so you never noticed the bit of slowness unless some jerk pointed it out.

Awesome! I missed this thread when you initially posted, so I get to skip the whole "fingers crossed" business 'cause it's updated already.

I'm assuming the handedness thing is non-negotiable? For security reasons? (I mean, you can't switch things around when you get to "your" table for a shift.) Good luck with the training in any case.

I believe they can't do that because the majority of dealers are right handed and a dealer is given a break every 2 hours for I believe 20 minuets.

Dunno how breaks, etc are organised yet there, but they expect the dealers to be able to use both hands simultaneously to be able to clear out and dish out gaming chips more efficiently and make the game rounds faster from the looks of it.

For example with roulette tables, they may have 2 tables back to back, if you are on one table you are expected to handle the wheel/ball with your left hand and the chips/etc with your right hand, while if you are on the other table it is a mirror image - using the wheel with your right hand and handling chips/etc with your left

ah. I thought maybe it was a camera focus thing, but that makes sense.

                I'm rooting for you!

I suggest picking up a deck of cards and maybe some chips from the store so you can work with them at home.
If I make no sense, I apologize. I'm constantly interrupted by an actual toddler.

raudf is right. practice at home. It's a physical skill, so more practice allows your body to learn the physical details of it.
