  • Went for tests yesterday

I had a tubal done after my third child. I was supposed to have one after my daughter was born because I have complicated pregnancies and since we had a boy and a girl I said no more and hubby said that was fine. Turned out though that I went for pretesting before surgery and the nurse came in and said I am sorry we can't do your tubal, you are already pregnant And yes, we took precautions, they just didn't work. My youngest son was just meant to be I guess

So anyway (TMI) I have not had my visitor for the last two months. I also had this weird feeling and cramping that I was worried about. You know how when you play with a rubber band and it pops you feel the vibration of it? That is what is felt like in my tubal area and then I had really bad cramping for a few days with some funky discharge. I have had cramping on and off ever since but no period. So I decided it was time to go get checked out. The nurse was awesome and talked with me about everything going on and then went to get the doctor. The doctor came in and was overly rushed it seemed like. She said she was gonna go ahead and do a pap since it was about that time anyway and I said OK. She did that and then did a few pushes on my abdomen and told the nurse to order labs. She pulled off her gloves and left. I was expecting her to ask me questions or answer question I might have had but ok. Oh, and they had light up speculums instead of the light on the head thing which was really cool and didn't feel like there was a miner going on an expedition down there, lol

So I get to the lab and the nurse told me take a seat but then the person that was going to take my blood says, no sit outside and I will come get you. I sit and wait then she finally comes to get me. Now I figured I would have to have blood drawn and I am always nervous. Not that I am scared of needles. I am a very hard stick and usually it takes 4 or more times to get something. I always end up telling them that and also tell them that I usually end up with a butterfly in the forearm or wrist and can they go ahead and just go for that. ANd I always get told, lets see what we have first and they want to try multiple sticks in both elbow bends. Then they finally go for the butterfly in the forearm or wrist and say they hate going for that area because it hurts the worst so they wanted to try the arms first. Yeah, like it didn't hurt for you to dig that needle around several times before doing what I told you would work in the first place She finally gets some blood and the other lab person comes in and looks at my chart and sees what one of the blood tests is for. For a possible ectopic pregnancy but I guess she just sees for HCG levels. She kind of mutters under her breath, Miss one cycle and run to the doctor for a blood test I let her know I heard that, I kind of snapped and smartlassedly said, well I have had a tubal and I am two months late and having other pregnancy symptoms so I needed to come in to make sure I was not having an ectopic pregnancy that would rupture and kill me. She kind of and left the room.

I am already worried enough plus I just had Miss Porcupine over here digging in my arm several times when she could have hit the vein the first time if she would have listened. I didn't get to ask the doctor any questions because she was in a hurry so I did not get any of my fears put at ease. I don't need you to be a smart ass to me too.

Hmm. There is a tubal procedure that involves what is essentially a rubber band. However, I don't think it's in use any more.

Best wishes on the test; hope it's just a strained ligament.

I don't think they used the band on mine. When they were talking about the options for it since some people think they might want a reversal later I told the doctor I wanted them to cut, tie, burn, rip out, stomp on, and pour acid on my tubes I did do a little research and found some instances where someone had a cyst burst and it felt like a rubberband popping in there. My grandmother has really bad cysts in her ovaries, well she did until she had all that removed. So I am hoping it is just something like that and not a pregnancy.

Good luck on your tests! I hope you find out soon whats going on. Also, that lab person was a tool. Judging people is not in her job description, im sure.

Gah, just imagine if the stuff is the harbinger of a new Imp?
I hope it's something easy and simple to take care of.

I would have loved to have asked for someone else but there is only one lab person there that draws blood and the one that came in for who know what reason was the one that said it. It is a walk in clinic that goes by your income since I don't have insurance. The other sucky part is that they called yesterday and said that they got some test results back and want me to go somewhere else for further testing and an ultrasound I asked if that meant if there was an ectopic pregnancy and she said since she didn't have all the test results back she could not discuss anything with me. So basically I still know nothing and I am more freaked out. I have to call another place monday since they don't have the equipment at the place I originally went to so hopefully I will know something then.

Could you use a home pregnancy test? Would that work?

I believe so, though it wouldn't state whether it was ectopic or not. AFAIK, the hormones for an ectopic pregnancy are identical to the hormones for a normal pregnancy.

Panacea? Eisa? TPM? Amina? Can you confirm?

                  1. Would you rather be right, or get the result you want?
                  2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
                  3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
                  4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

Can't confirm, but I've heard that sometimes ectopic pregnanies don't cause a positive result from a pregnancy test due to lower hormone levels or something. That's why the instructions tell you to wait and test again in a week if you have a negative result and no period.

Good luck PagentMama, I hope everything goes well!

They are. There are two types of pregnancy tests: urine, and serum. A urine pregnancy test only tells you if human chorionicgonotropin (hCG) hormone is present in your urine. It can't tell you "how pregnant" you are.

A serum pregnancy test measures the actual amount of hCG in the bloodstream. It's kind of a funky test as the serum levels vary widely and overlap for the various weeks of pregnancy, so it's not real reliable for telling you "how" pregnant you are. An ultrasound is much, much better.

The home tests are urine tests. They're just as good as what we use in the hospital.

An ectopic pregnancy is a normal pregnancy that implants in the wrong place. Levels of hCG are unaffected.

The reason you repeat the test in 1 week is because, while the test is 98% reliable, you can have false negatives. The false negatives come from the wide variations in hCG levels in early pregnancy.

Measuring the serum hCG can be useful in determining if a pregnancy has ended (levels will drop) or if the pregnancy is in fact a hydatidaform mole (molar pregnancy) (levels will rise exponentially).

Ectopic pregnancies are usually diagnosed on ultrasound. If the ectopic is in the fallopian tubes (most common place), the ultrasound is done as part of the work up for abdominal pain.

Ultrasound is indelibly associated with "let's look at Baby!"
However. I know that it's used for soft-tissue viewing in general, and have heard it used in cases looking at livers, pancreases, stomachs, and more.
I'd still be freaking out tho.
EDIT: isn't the fix for ectopic pregnancy "removal of site"? >_> ie surgery?

Thanks for explaining that Panacea! It always did sound a little screwy to me, the guy that said it was a Ob/Gyn with 20+ years experience so I didn't feel qualifed to argue.

I had to have a kidney and pelvic ultrasound done to work out whether I had a simple or complex UTI. Quite interesting....until I got to the point where she asked me how far along in my menstrual cycle I was!

This is going to be interesting if I need another one.... (I'm on the Implanon so my bleeding patterns are all over the place)

I had an ultrasound for my ovarian cysts as a teenager, so that could be what they're looking for as well. *hug* stay strong and have faith
