  • Exercise NOT heallthy?huh?

This is something I've been running in to more over the past few years. Apparently it's a trend in some doctors to advise patients who are trying to lose weight that "Exercise won't help you lose weight, so you don't need to bother with it"
The hell?! Since when does the output of caloric energy (physical exercise) NOT help in toning the body, creating more lean muscle mass which then helps with your resting metabolism? Besides the benefits of having MORE energy, more effective metabolism and digestion.
And no, it wasn't "Exercise by itself won't help you lose weight", it's been "Exercise doesn't help you lose weight, you're better off just concentrating on adjusting your diet" and trying to discourage me from going to the gym (right now I'm staying away from weight lifting and concentrating mostly on low impact cardio until my back is trong enough and I have the endurance for running)
    I’ll be changing doctors now.

Well I know there needs to be variety. Your body adjusts to routines so that you lose fewer calories while doing certain activities, which is why you need to break up the routine every once in a while.

Yeah, that's why I do several different exercises. I usually alternate between bike, treadmill, the rowing machine and the elyptical.

The EU recently ruled that water does not hydrate so this doesn't shock me one bit.

Soon you'll have some doctor advocating three bacon double cheeseburgers with two milkshakes plus a supersize fries and half a chocolate cake per day does not have any effect on heart disease.

Wait... tell me, is your doc overweight or did a drug pusher.. err, representative for a weight pill come out the office before you went in?

My preferred nurse practitioner is all for exercise, because it's cheaper than diet pills (or whatever fad is passing around) and he knows that it reduces a whole spectrum of physical and mental issues. Anything that takes the edge off and reduces medical costs is a GOOD THING in his book.

And people wonder why I think so highly of him, even though he's not a "doctor."
If I make no sense, I apologize. I'm constantly interrupted by an actual toddler.

Nope, and this has come from several doctors that I've seen since I got to Oregon. they seem to think that the body will magically become fit without exercise, or maybe they think that I'm too stupid to concentrate on eating better AND regular exercise?

Yup, they're targeting bottled water claims that their water gets you wet. I'll note it says nothing about tap water. So if it comes from the spout, it gets you wet?

I could understand being told not to start an exercise program until you'd lost some weight from diet changes alone, or being told that you need to go to physical therapy, but not to exercise at all.... that's just.... what?!

Many moons ago a friends BF and I were making smalltalk (background: He's a VERY keen Soccer player and referee (he gets hated at International level)) and I mentioned something about exercise I was doing at the gym and how I'd try and bump up the level to go past "fat burn". He then treated me to 45 minutes of why this was a bad idea, if I was trying to lose weight, and how the body altered, dependant on level of exercise, to the point that exercise could make you gain weight.
TL;DR? If you exercise at a relatively low level - you lose fat, exercise harder - you get fitter, not thinner.

Though to be cruel I might point out that high school soccer thrashed my knees, equestrian arts thrashed both sacrum and dance thrashed my hip sockets. If I had not participated in said sports, I would not be gimping along so painfully today.

I've been told by a physician that no amount of diet and exercise will allow me to lose weight and my only option is bariatric surgery.

Granted, I weight quite a bit more than I should, but, I have been steadily losing the weight on my own, albeit more slowly than I would like.

Actually, that is a load of horsepucky - there is always um, Duke[?] hospitals holy shit program where you go in and they IV feed you, and you get something like 250 cal a day to keep your digestive tract working and the physioterrorists work with you. I know that there have been TV shows on the occasional Mound o'Humans going through the program until they lose enough to get self mobile then they get moved to a different program. I understand it can be hell on the body, but if you absolutely need a kickstart, it works.

My personal dream would be to have an olympic sized slightly deeper than normal lap pool so I could spend a couple hours a day doing 'physio laps' [you don't swim, per se but are in a belt and your legs duckpaddle you around. It is fantastic for my sacral and hip joints issues. And less boring than treading water for a couple hours, though that is effectively what you are sort of doing ] I love swimming anyway. We are thinking of renewing our scuba quals, we can get the refresher courses [PADI] on base for almost nothing, but the equipment cost is more than we can afford this year.
