  • Didn't even bother to look up

This one didn't happen to me. A few days ago, my friend came back from the grocery store upset grumbling about entitled old people. So I let him vent.

What happened is that he was waiting in line at check out. He was a few steps back from the the person he was behind so he didn't block the aisle and there were people behind him. A little old lady with a shopping cart, her head was bowed down so that she was staring at the floor, cut in front of him. She never looked up to see that there was a line.

He politely told her that there was a line. She became defensive and told said she didn't see what the problem was since she only had 3 items. (They were in the express lane.) She didn't look up the entire time to see the other people waiting. He tried to explain that it wasn't the amount of items, but that she just cut in front of the people waiting and that she could pay more attention. She was still getting defensive and the other people in line didn't want bother with it so he dropped it.

He finished his checking out and she was at the end of the register still muttering at him about that it shouldn't matter because she only had 3 items. He was smart enough not to push the point with her and let it go. He said the last he saw of her was her going out to her with her head down and still staring at the ground pushing her shopping cart out to the car.

As I was letting him vent about it, he griped to me about why the cashier didn't do anything. I had tell him that there really wasn't anything the cashier could do. Trying to enforce small things like that aren't really worth the hassle. It was easier to get the little old lady through the line as quickly as possible rather than have it escalate because she would have protested the treatment.

From what he was saying, she was intentially not bothering to look around. I don't really know since I wasn't there. But he is usually a pretty good judge of people. He wasn't even trying to get her to back to the end of the line. He would have been fine had the lady bothered to look around and notice the other people waiting.

When I used to do bank runs nearly daily (for the small business I worked for), I got to know the tellers pretty well. This bank was not the old fashioned "LINE FORMS HERE!" type place, yet it was fairly clear where to stand for the line. (Also, there were two sets of doors.) I was the only person in line, with two tellers helping people. As one lady leaves, another customer bursts through the doors closest to the lady who was leaving. She does not look around, but storms up to the teller and throws down her papers. She had to walk by me to get to the window. This happened quickly, so it's not like I was just standing around, the previous customer was just finished.

The teller looks at me and I just roll my eyes. She helps the other lady and after she leaves we have a big laugh about it. If I had wanted, she would have told that lady to back off, since she hadn't called her over, which is normal bank etiquette anyway. But in this case it was just funnier to watch and make snide comments later "maybe she's late for her manicure" and such.
Replace anger management with stupidity management.

To be fair, she may have had a severe spinal issue. There are at least two older women (80's or so) I see in town who walk down the street hunched over like shrimps. Another one with a similar issue had to wear a neck brace.

It happens more to women as they lose calcium in their bones due to having children when they're younger.

I figured something like that might be the case. My friend was just really surprised by the reaction he got from what is generally a common courtesy thing.

I grew up in a small seaside town that used to nearly double its population in the summer due to visiting high school students from other countries. One time I was queuing in Maccy Ds, with a suitable gap between the throng and the counter so people with completed orders could walk away without having to sidestep those waiting to be served. Suddenly a horde of students appeared & tried to fill said gap!

Without a second thought, I grabbed the ubiquitous backpack of the biggest one & yanked them towards me. "Queue is back here, mate." I continued firmly guiding them until they were behind the dozen or so others of us that were following custom, and magically all their associates followed along! I was allowed to resume my place, and I got a free ice cream too!
This was one of those times where my mouth says "have a nice day" but my brain says "go step on a Lego". - RegisterAce
