  • Sucky or reasonable request?

This is more of a 'hearing' rather than a sighting.

Elderly relative went to local foofy tearoom (I'm being snarky; I want to go to this place myself ) with three friends. Tearoom opens at 11:30 a.m. They got there quite early. Owners pull up around 11:15 a.m. (No, I don't know why they show up that close to opening ... maybe all the prepping and whatnot was done the night before?)

Owners tell the group they don't open for another 15 minutes. It's cold, damp and windy out.

Before the 15 minutes are up, relative goes and BANGS the knocker on the door. Owner opens it and tries to say again they're not open yet and (according to relative's narration) "I just PUSHED past her and walked in! I mean, we're a bunch of old gray-haired ladies! And it was cold out!"

My first thought was "Then why didn't you all go sit in somebody's car where you'd at least be out of the wind?"

I'm 60. I don't consider my age or my gray hairs to be some kind of pass-card. If they let me in early, that's cool. If not, I'll sit in my car and read until the doors DO open. So basically, I find this attitude and behaviour unreasonable.

    Or am I missing something?

I'm quite a stickler for rules, so I think you know where I'm going to stand on this. 11:30 means just that, age or weather is irrelevant. Pushing their way in is unacceptable. If the owners had wanted to let them in to be nice, that is up to them. Maybe a few minutes is no big deal to a lot of folks, but I'm fairly OCD about this sort of thing.

Asking if you can come in early, politely and accepting the answer you get is not sucky.

Pushing past the manager is unlawful entry. If I was the manager, I would have demanded that they leave, informing them that they would not be served. Actually, if I was the manager, they would not have gotten past me (6'4" and 280Lbs). For trying that stunt, they would have been informed that they are no longer welcome.

Sorry, but if the weather outside is poor, manage your time better and arrive closer to when the store actually OPENS. And if your relative had a nice, heated CAR to sit in while she waited, that's doubly stupid. She was definitely in the wrong.

I'm pretty much with the majority here. Yes, you're coming from the next town, so you can't necessarily time yourself right to the minute ... but OTOH, why the heck not arrange to arrive at NOON, rather than just blithely setting off at any ol' time?

They've been there before, so they can't even use "Well, we thought it opened earlier" as an excuse.

csquared, from your description of ourself, I doubt "relative" would've tried pushing past you -- although I'd be happy to stand there with a videocamera if she did. I think this place is run by two women of average height and weight, though, so ...

I suspect the woman was taken by surprise, which is how "relative" got past her. I'm betting if she tries this again, the results will be different.

Reminds me of a few years ago. My brother had come over and we had planned to head to best buy right as they open so we could copies of a game we were both waiting for. We got to the parking lot a little early.

Brother decides to be a dick and open the sunroof and let in all the snow. I get outside to brush myself off and I figure brush off his car to be nice. I needed to kill time anyway. After this I decide to go wait at the front door. There was another guy waiting. He asks me a question.

"Don't you think it's unfair they expect us to wait outside in this weather?"
"Not really. We chose to be here this early."

That was pretty much the end of that.
To right the countless wrongs of our days... We shine this light of true redemption, that this place may become as paradise...Oh, what a wonderful world such would be...

The entitlement of some people never ceases to amaze me. The only time I've ever gone into anyplace before they actually opened was several years ago, on my way to my mom's. Part of my route takes me on Route 15 through PA and MD. Which is 2 lanes, pretty remote, and few exits, but with crossovers to the other direction.

Apparently at one of thse there had been a bad accident, and the road was closed. Thankfully it was right by a restaurant that was opening in under 30 minutes. I really had to pee so i went in, and politely asked if i might use the ladies room, and also said, once they were open, i would stay and eat (which I had planned to do anyway). They were very nice, and said sure, go ahead. And once i came out, told me to sit down, and someone would come take my order shortly.
