  • SCs invade Battleship Cove

A friend and I had a mutual off-day today, so we took a day trip to Battleship Cove in Fall River, MA to tour the battleship Massachusetts. He'd never been there, and I hadn't been there in several years, so it was a great day for both of us.

The museum is open from 9-5, and admission is $14 for adults. Now if you ask me, the price is EXTREMELY reasonable, considering that they rely on ticket sales to preserve and restore not only the battleship, but a destroyer, a submarine, and a Russian missile corvette. The one ticket gets you onto all the ships and you can stay all day (well, until 5PM).

Anyway, we spent about 4 hours touring the ships and had lunch aboard the battleship. Around 3:30 we were perusing the gift shop right before leaving, when two guys came up to the ticket counter (inside the shop).

    SC: When do you close?

(Idiot. There was a BIG SIGN on the door listing the hours)

    Clerk: 5PM

SC: Oh.....how long does it take to see everything?

Clerk: Well, to fully tour all the ships takes at least two and a half hours, and can take as long as four.

(It had taken us about 4 hours, including lunch).

SC: Oh...then can we get our tickets for half price?

    Clerk: I'm sorry?

SC: Well, you said we only have half the time needed to see everything, so therefore we should only have to pay half price.

(How about getting to the museum earlier?)

Clerk: I'm sorry sir, but the prices are not negotiable. We do offer discounts for AAA members and active-duty military personnel, but that's it.

SC: But we aren't going to be able to see everything!

Clerk: Sir, you still have enough time to see a LOT. And we're open every day.

SC: Well if we pay full price, can we stay after 5PM?

    Clerk: No, sir.

    SC: But......!!!!!

Around this time I just up and walked out of the gift shop and told my friend I'd meet him at the car, as I was getting annoyed just listening to these guys.

What a pair of idiots. That's like going into a grocery store ten minutes before they close, and asking for half price because you didn't have enough time to go down all the isles.

Oh brother. News flash fellas, the museum's not responsible for when you arrive. That is stuff you should find out ahead of time, and plan accordingly if you want to see everything. What a couple of morons.

I came here late so I shouldn't pay as much? That's the most bizarre logic I've ever heard!

I used to get people like that at the theatre all the time.
"My movie started 20 minutes ago, I should get a discount."

No, you should show up earlier!

Maybe it's the same people and they just went on vacation. That thought makes me feel better than thinking there's multiple people out there with that mindset.

Bonus points if they show up 20 mins late and ask for a discount of the most promoted and popular movie of the year, then throw a fit when you tell them that the movie is sold out for the rest of the week!

Sorry, there are definately more of them. I got them every weekend, too.
The only words you said that I understood were "His", "Phone" and "Ya'll". The other 2 paragraphs worth was about as intelligible as a drunken Teletubby barkin' come on's at a Hooter's waitress.

              *sighs* Fine. Crush my hopes.

Yeah, I don't even wanna get into people like the guy who tried to bribe me for $20 to let him and 2 friends sneak into a sold-out show. 15 minutes after it started. On a Friday night.

Rarely, some attractions do have cheaper rates at the end of the day. Hersheypark in Pennsylvania has half price Sunset Admission prices and the National Aquarium in Baltimore sometimes runs a ticket special on Fridays after five pm.
So, it's not unheard of and it never hurts to ask. But these guys were wrong to go SC when they didn't hear what they wanted to hear. Plus, they should have called ahead of time to ask, they would've saved the clerk some irritation and themselves a needless trip.

Sure, it doesn't hurt to ask but when the answer is no, just accept it and buy a ticket, or not. Come back tomorrow if you want more time.

I love those kinds of places. I've done the ship tours at South Street Seaport, and in Baltimore, I think. It's really cool. Especially the submarines, since my dad spent some time on subs when he was in the Navy. It's interesting to see how he lived down there..

We have the USS Requin WWII sub docked here at the Carnegie Science Center. Technically it's *not* a WWII sub, since it never saw service during the war--it didn't even reach Pearl Harbor until war's end.

It's an interesting tour, complete with sound effects in several locations. Rather cold in there during the winter though...
