I always use the self-checkouts when a store has them and I usually have a basket not a cart most times. Anyway I've had a couple of problems with them but I haven't made any mistakes with them in awhile but I've only seen a few people messing them up. Now I have seen a some people with cart loads using them or waiting in the line but I don't remember seeing them having a problem.

Also on the subject of USCANs, there is a Krogers right across the street from the Goodwill I used to do some training at a few months ago and one day after training I went to that Krogers to pick up some things. I would note that this Krogers is in a poor section and so the store wasn't as nice as the ones I usually go to because they are in more richier sections. Anyway I decided that I would use the self-checkout since I always use them anyway and well, I found something very interesting. Before you put the item in the bag you have to rub it on a narrow black surface (can't remember what they call it) that was next to the scanner and well, of course this was the first time I saw this because they don't have that at the other stores I ussually go to. I'm assuming it was an anti-theft device and they have it because of the area they are in.

It is, and they do. One of the WM's around here has that "feature" at the self checkout for the same reasons. The strip was attached to the scanner so that as you scanned your items, it deactivated the anti theft tag. there was no way I could see to deactivate the tag without scanning the item. Pretty clever system.

As a (currently) single guy, it's the self-scan for me every time with the basket full of nukeables and various beverages.

The only exception is if there's a hoard of people with full carts waiting and not looking too comfortable with this whole "technology" thing.

*Please don't write checks at the self/express checkout. Freaking check cards are FREE at almost any bank nowadays.
Seconded! At Wal-Mart, the Self-checkouts don't even take checks. The machine alerts the cashier on duty, who then has to suspend the transaction and take it over to their own till to process the check there. And you can bet I've had the customers who didn't even hit the "check" button; they just stood there staring at the screen wondering where to put the check in, and thus held up the line. Or whined that the machine wouldn't take their check (in the cash slot).
