  • You can take your pre-orders...

...AND SHOVE IN YOUR POST-PUMPKIN-PIE-DIGESTER-TUNNEL! I don't believe I was a SC in this situation, though trust me, I wanted to be. Allow me to explain. I don't pre-order stuff. Sure, I probably could and at least then I'd pretty much ensure the game would be there right when I want it to be, but I don't. I guess I'm just lazy.

Anyway, right near the end of March, with my vacation coming up, I was able to get Crisis Core a little earlier than expected. Therefore, like a moron, I assumed I could get Mana Khemia early, too. Here's what happened...

Sucky Employee: "Hello, sir. Is there anything I can help you find?"
Me: "Actually, yes. I was interested in when two games came out. I'm just not sure if they're out yet. I'm interested in Mana Khemia and Persona 3 FES."

The clerk looked a little confused, but that's okay. These weren't two well known titles, so I kinda expected it. He handed me the distribution list or whatever and I confirmed just what I thought but had hoped against...Mana Khemia 4/1, Persona 3 FES 4/15.

Me: "Ah, I see...so they're not here yet then."
SE: "Well, actually, would you like to pre-order them?"
Me: "No, that's okay." *I proceed to start browsing*
SE: "Well, are you sure? I mean, I would hate to see you come in when they're here and there isn't a copy available."
Me: (Um...you didn't even know about the titles and I know these aren't going to "fly off the shelves") "...No, that's okay, really."
SE: "Well, I'm just saying...because, like, there was this one time, this guy really wanted Rainbow Six Vegas and he was all mad because it wasn't here and, well..."

At this point, I space out. I've already asserted TWICE that I'm not interested. I'm also a pretty patient person. Assuming these titles really were out, no biggie, I can either scope them out somewhere else or wait a bit. This guy would NOT. STOP. Worse: He's been there for over a year and is VERRRRRY SLOOOOW, especially when they have rushes. And why?

    - He really is slow at the whole process...ringing up, finding the title(s), etc.
    - He likes to make small talk that is not only awkward, but equally slow. I say awkward because it feels forced and for me at least, it makes me uncomfortable.
    - He goes through THE SAME SPIEL regardless of whether there are 10 people waiting in line or 2. I've seen people leave the store if he's the only one ringing people up.

The guy's head is in the right place, but it's as if he has no clear judgement or something. I commend him for being persistent in a potential sale, but you'd think he'd learn a thing or two being there as long as he has been. I actually ended up buying MK elsewhere and may buy P3FES somewhere else as well. We'll see. Anybody else deal with awkward/overly pushy salespeople like this in game stores?

Pushy sales like that are why I now order all my games on-line. Screw it. Store management, through their inane policies of PUSH PUSH PUSH, has sent me to the on-line discounters.

Le sigh. Alas, it's how we get hours.

BUT, if someone says no, then that means no. To ask more than once is bad customer service. I don't personally do it. If someone says they don't want to hear my spiel, then I shut the hell up. No means no, and I can't stand it when coworkers or people at our other stores harass the crap out of people to preorder because it drive customers away. Yeah, those numbers sure are nice, but so is keeping customers. I've had a couple of people come into my store from the other store in our town because they got harassed too much about preordering or the discount card over there.

The point is to get customers to pre-order due to their excitement about the game or because they genuinely want to come back and pick it up from us because we made their shopping experience good. Yeah, we do get limited allocations with less hyped games, but managers can request copies from other stores if they have none in. And there's always online.

(WOW I didn't realize I needed to rant about this stupid crap.)

He sounds like an idiot who needs to learn where the line is and who to make small talk with. You can tell him I said he's an idiot for being slow and pushy, too

I always pre order my Wrestling games. Hell, I want to actually play it when it comes out. And yes I do pay the whole price for it.

It took everything I had NOT to go off on him. I know this guy's just trying to do his job and probably feels pressure from management to drive sales, etc. But hey, seriously, there's no reason to get all anecdotal when I've expressed TWICE that I'm not interested. Here's what I think he was hoping would happen...

          Me: "...No, that's okay."
SE: "Well, it's just, there was this one customer that really wanted Rainbow Six Vegas, and-"
Me: "The Rainbow Six Vegas anecdote! I've heard of this one, it happened to me as well! Oh my DEAR GOD, sir, you've saved me an enormous amount of hassle! Pre-order those bitches up and while I'm at it, I'll take every new football game that's out! I WANT YOUR BABIEZ ZOMG!!!"

To be honest, most of the time I use my womanly powers to get pre-order, an advantage that poor sap doesn't have!

Doesn't really work on soccor moms, though..

preorders are good if i REALLY want that item, otherwise, i can wait.

he was pushy, as everyone said, once is enough; most are smart enough to let it go. (i was glad when we stopped having to push the duetto cards)

you exercised your right to take your business elsewhere; no suckiness anywhere that i can see on your part.
                look! it's ghengis khan!
Sorry, but while I can do many things, extracting heads from anuses isn't one of them. (so sayeth the irv)

You know, it's funny...I had actually still planned on getting Mana Khemia there and I wouldn't mind getting Persona 3 FES there. I come in there regularly. To give you an idea of the pure convenience, this place is on my way to work. It doesn't get much more convenient than that! To go to the Gamestop instead, I have to make a beeline down an entirely different way. That doesn't mean it's completely out of the way, but it's certainly not the way I'd want to take to get to and from work.

No, I just figured I'd go there instead because...

                  - Gamestop will almost undoubtedly have what I want, without pre-order.
                  - They typically have a lot of other stuff I'm willing to browse through.
                  - I've only had ONE bad experience at the location and really, it was my fault admittedly.
                  - I knew that, without a doubt, I wouldn't have to deal with that dude again.

As far as convenience, I'd rather go to the other place. If it gets much worse, screw it.

Yeah, I don't blame the CSRs for being pushy. Management is pounding on them to push this, push that. I just hate the pushing.

So, I just order on-line. Paying for shipping is worth avoiding sucky drivers.

I blame them for being pushy because I work at the same damn place and know what it entails. Being pushy pisses customers off, meaning we lose those customers. You gotta be graceful about it.

I have a couple of people who will only shop in my store when I'm working because I don't harass the crap out of them when they're trying to buy stuff. To me, units per transaction and making sure people know they can trade in their old games is more important, that stuff ultimately leads to people reserving things (because they can get more store credit that way), and the more stuff they buy, the more stuff they have to trade in the future.
