  • Sighted myself? Or not?

I was just reading this thread and now I think I might have been kind of sucky.

I had a baby shower about two months ago. I was registered at Target, so pretty much everything I received came from there. One of the things on my registry was a baby carrier thing (the kind where you carry the baby like a front backpack) in khaki. A very sweet lady bought this item for me - in pink. She did not include a gift receipt.

Well, I had a boy. So, I figured I could just run over to the store and swap the pink one out for a plain or blue one. I didn't want money back or store credit, just an even exchange. I went to customer service, and the guy told me that because it was over $20 there was nothing he could do. I asked why I couldn't just swap it out, and he said that's why they encourage people to hang on to their gift receipts. Well, that's great, but I never had a gift receipt. I asked if there was anyone else I could talk to. He said that he was a manager, but he'd get another one. So a female manager came up and gave me the same line, "That's why we encourage people to hang on to their gift receipts." I asked her what I was supposed to do, since I didn't buy the darned thing. She sighed, and told me to go ahead and get another one.

Now, I was not rude. I did not go all EW on the nice folks. I was very polite. The female manager saw me a few minutes later, and asked if I'd found a blue one. (For what it's worth, the only non-pink one was black with kind of a floral pattern - reminds me of surfer shorts but it'll do) I told her I found a black one, and thanked her, and apologized for being a pain. She said the policy was dumb and she didn't mind. I just honestly don't understand what the big deal was. Thank goodness that was the only thing I needed to exchange.

Was I that out of line to want to even swap this thing? I get that the policy is there for a reason, but what about someone in my situation?

I don't think so. The lady that gave you the thing should have given you the gift receipt.

I don't think you were sucky.

Target has just gotten a lot tighter with its return policy lately. My guess would be that maybe people steal the most convenient item, then want to exchange it for the appropriate style when the baby arrives. I can believe it happened.

You were not sucky at all, and you even apologized to the manager for the inconvenience and stuff. That's not something a SC would ever do IMO.

          You weren't sucky.

However, I think that you should've called the person who gave you the gift in the first place and asked her if she still had the receipt(s).

If Target's registry is anything like Dillard's, they should be able to print out a copy of everything that was bought, even if you weren't actually registered for that particular item. (Of course, that's assuming that the person that bought it for you told the sales associate that it was a registry purchase.)

We had a few items that were given to us that were bought on clearance (all sales final), or unwrapped to go with a different gift, or the like, and rarely have we gotten gift receipts. For the items we couldn't return, like a set of receiving blankets we just could not find a home store for, we hung onto the item until someone else we knew was having a baby, then regifted. If thought is put into it, regifting can actually work.

I do like that my mother-in-law has started giving us gift receipts with everything she buys for us. Go MIL!

As was mentioned, I'd think with an item that was on the gift registry, it shouldn't be that difficult to look up the purchase. However, I have no idea how their system is set up.

I was just returning something at Target today and noticed a new sign saying you can get a gift receipt up to 90 days after purchase. I'm assuming the purchaser has to go in with the original receipt or credit card to get it (didn't ask).
