I was just reading this thread and now I think I might have been kind of sucky.
I had a baby shower about two months ago. I was registered at Target, so pretty much everything I received came from there. One of the things on my registry was a baby carrier thing (the kind where you carry the baby like a front backpack) in khaki. A very sweet lady bought this item for me - in pink. She did not include a gift receipt.
Well, I had a boy. So, I figured I could just run over to the store and swap the pink one out for a plain or blue one. I didn't want money back or store credit, just an even exchange. I went to customer service, and the guy told me that because it was over $20 there was nothing he could do. I asked why I couldn't just swap it out, and he said that's why they encourage people to hang on to their gift receipts. Well, that's great, but I never had a gift receipt. I asked if there was anyone else I could talk to. He said that he was a manager, but he'd get another one. So a female manager came up and gave me the same line, "That's why we encourage people to hang on to their gift receipts." I asked her what I was supposed to do, since I didn't buy the darned thing. She sighed, and told me to go ahead and get another one.
Now, I was not rude. I did not go all EW on the nice folks. I was very polite. The female manager saw me a few minutes later, and asked if I'd found a blue one. (For what it's worth, the only non-pink one was black with kind of a floral pattern - reminds me of surfer shorts
but it'll do) I told her I found a black one, and thanked her, and apologized for being a pain. She said the policy was dumb and she didn't mind. I just honestly don't understand what the big deal was. Thank goodness that was the only thing I needed to exchange.
Was I that out of line to want to even swap this thing? I get that the policy is there for a reason, but what about someone in my situation?
