1.) How large was the item?
2.) Was it on the counter or in your hand at the time?
I'll explain why I ask this...while the lady from the library reads over my shoulder like the hawk that she is. Oh now I'm getting scowled at. FUN!
When I worked returns, I found that very often customers would come in with very small items and stand there like knots on a log. Now I'd look out, see a customer with apparently empty hands, then see behind them customer B with a large heavy object in their hand. It all came down to priority. Customer with heavy object trumps customer with tiny object. However I'd also make sure to tell the customer with the light thing that I was doing it so Customer B could put their heavy, oh my god how did they carry that in here, thing down and get them out of the way first.
