I am so tired of the phone calls. To cut back on expenses I took caller ID off the land line. Most evenings these last couple of days have been spent using the answering machine to listen to the same three candidates (or their spouse) leaving me messages. Personally it makes me less likely to want to vote for them.
I don't live in the US but a friend of mine does. He happens to live "out there" in one of those spots where there are no highspeed cable or DSL Internet services. As a result, he still connects to the Internet at 56K and in fact has his land line for only this reason and busy constantly (I gather he uses a cell phone for his regular calls). This landline number isn't listed and there's no reason for anyone to call it. However that all changed when the campaign robocalls apparently knew it and started dialing. I'm only aware of this because apparently his computer modem (or the line possibly) doesn't work exactly properly; incoming call, even resulting in a busy signal... has about a 3 in 4 chance of disrupting his Internet and kicking him offline. So... due to the efforts of Obama and McCain volunteers... he kept getting knocked off the Internet during the final week or two of the election.

Might want to mention to him the possibility of picking up an Air-Card and setting up for cellular modem plan. Between the dedicated phone-line and the ISP costs, it might just be cheaper for him, and the practical speeds seem to be equivalent to a 56k modem even without access to 3G systems.

Another option for him might be satellite internet. If he can actually get something like Dish Network or similar, then some of them have internet plans as well. That's what my parents use, since they're also "out there" enough not to get cable or DSL.
