This is kind of along the same lines of the post about the crazy lady who stole the OP's quarters.
Except this involves a cashier. And a twenty dollar bill.
I'll accept my part in this situation - it was caused by a brain fart of mine. But it still doesn't warrant what this bitch tried to do.
It was around Christmastime a few years back and I was doing some gift shopping in the cosmetics department of a major department store. I was making my purchase, trying to cleverly pay in a way that would reduce the amount of coin I got back, when I gave the cashier an unnecessary extra twenty. She had taken it by the time I realized my mistake, but I assumed she would give it back.
She didn't. She gave me the change as though I had given her a single twenty.
I told her "Excuse me, miss, but I accidentally gave you an extra twenty."
She responded in a super sweet, fake tone: "Oh no, honey, you're mistaken. You only gave me one twenty."
"No no. I'm sorry. I gave you two twenties because I thought it would help, but I made a mistake."
She kept saying that "Oh no honey," bullshit, going as far to pat me on the back in a "comforting" way as I got more agitated. I know what I gave her. I was NOT mistaken.
Then it became clear to me. Her artificial tone, her terms of endearment, her attempts to physically comfort me: bitch was trying to steal my money.
And at Christmas!
When it became clear that I wasn't going to eat her bullshit with a spoon, she got her manager. When I explained the situation, the manager asked me why I paid the way I did, and I admitted it was just a stupid mistake on my part. The manager said that they would give me back the money when they counted the till at the end of the day, but I refused: what if the cashier tried to pocket my money?
I told them I would write down my name and phone number, and if they found themselves short, they could call me and I would give them back the twenty. (Not bloody likely.) But I wasn't leaving without my money. The manager saw that I was going to stand my ground, so she instructed the cashier to give me back my twenty.
And the cashier had the nerve to protest! But the manager firmly insisted she comply.
Then I left, pretty shaken by the experience - the cashier was so creepy, so obvious with her overly sweet demeanour - she'd CLEARLY been out to benefit from my brain fart.
Wanna know how I know? They never called me.
I can understand some cashiers are weary of the scam where the customer tries to confuse them so they end up with more money than they gave, but in this case, my mistake was not similar to that scam.
The cashier sure was one shady lady...
