  • B*tch Better Have My Money

This is kind of along the same lines of the post about the crazy lady who stole the OP's quarters.

Except this involves a cashier. And a twenty dollar bill.

I'll accept my part in this situation - it was caused by a brain fart of mine. But it still doesn't warrant what this bitch tried to do.

It was around Christmastime a few years back and I was doing some gift shopping in the cosmetics department of a major department store. I was making my purchase, trying to cleverly pay in a way that would reduce the amount of coin I got back, when I gave the cashier an unnecessary extra twenty. She had taken it by the time I realized my mistake, but I assumed she would give it back.

She didn't. She gave me the change as though I had given her a single twenty.

I told her "Excuse me, miss, but I accidentally gave you an extra twenty."

She responded in a super sweet, fake tone: "Oh no, honey, you're mistaken. You only gave me one twenty."

"No no. I'm sorry. I gave you two twenties because I thought it would help, but I made a mistake."

She kept saying that "Oh no honey," bullshit, going as far to pat me on the back in a "comforting" way as I got more agitated. I know what I gave her. I was NOT mistaken.

Then it became clear to me. Her artificial tone, her terms of endearment, her attempts to physically comfort me: bitch was trying to steal my money.

    And at Christmas!

When it became clear that I wasn't going to eat her bullshit with a spoon, she got her manager. When I explained the situation, the manager asked me why I paid the way I did, and I admitted it was just a stupid mistake on my part. The manager said that they would give me back the money when they counted the till at the end of the day, but I refused: what if the cashier tried to pocket my money?

I told them I would write down my name and phone number, and if they found themselves short, they could call me and I would give them back the twenty. (Not bloody likely.) But I wasn't leaving without my money. The manager saw that I was going to stand my ground, so she instructed the cashier to give me back my twenty.

And the cashier had the nerve to protest! But the manager firmly insisted she comply.

Then I left, pretty shaken by the experience - the cashier was so creepy, so obvious with her overly sweet demeanour - she'd CLEARLY been out to benefit from my brain fart.

Wanna know how I know? They never called me.

I can understand some cashiers are weary of the scam where the customer tries to confuse them so they end up with more money than they gave, but in this case, my mistake was not similar to that scam.

The cashier sure was one shady lady...

Or she just honestly thought you had given her one twenty. That can happen too. Imagine how many people "try on" the "I gave you too much money" routine. She probably genuinely thought you were faking it.

      I already considered that:

I can understand some cashiers are weary of the scam where the customer tries to confuse them so they end up with more money than they gave
But the way she spoke to me was very suspicious - guess it's hard to explain to someone who wasn't there - but her tone was just very fake. If she had acted differently, then I would have believed that she honestly thought I had given her one twenty.

When I was a cashier, we had a policy that a mgr had to count out the drawer ASAP if a customer thought insufficient change was given. One old lady said she gave me a 20, when she gave me a 10. As we counted out the drawer, she just berated me the whole time, telling me I'm a thief, etc. Turned out my drawer was actually a dime short (I had dropped some change on the ground earlier in the day). Of course that didn't stop the old bat from calling me a thief and insisting that I stole her money. I even went so far as to turn out all my pockets and remove my wallet to show her I had no cash on me whatsoever. But she kept screaming at me. I was honestly about to punch her in the face, and I'm not a violent person at all.

Manager ended up giving her $10 just to make her go away. I was livid. On the plus side, 45 minutes later the woman who was behind the old bat came back into the store to get something and asked me what ended up happening. She said she knew I was right and went and complained to the mgr for giving the lady $10.

When you're a cashier, the proper response to that situation is to immediately call a manager over and count the till right then, from both a loss prevention and customer service viewpoint. I gave someone back change for a ten when they had given me a twenty, and even though I was pretty sure the customer was right, I still counted the till down right then. Which, in my opinion, is what the manager in this story should have done.

Oh, I definitely think you're right about that. I would have had no problem if they had done that because I had nothing to hide - I had no doubt that I gave an extra 20.

Hope I'm not exposing myself as an SC!

              [/sarcasm]

I've done the exact same thing, giving an extra twenty, only the clerk said "Don't need that one !" and we both laughed, and went on with out days...

I agree that the manager should've counted the till right then. Who's to say the cashier won't accidentally give someone else that extra $20 in change later in the day, making her drawer balance out in the end? (It could happen, just as easily as a customer giving her an extra $20 that doesn't get returned.) If I were in the OP's shoes, I would've insisted the till be counted right then if at all possible.

At my work, they tend to count the drawer down right away if the customer is in the store.

Apparently if they only call about it, they have to wait til the end of the shift.

The other week I got an extra £10 back in my change from a shop. I'd just been to the cash machine and got two £10s out (which were the only notes I had), paid for a bit of shopping with one, and got £15 or so back in change.
I pointed it out and tried to return the £10 which required the manager coming out (and taking a few minutes to realise I wasn't complaining about being short changed but, erm, long changed? instead), they took my name and number in case I was wrong, and thanked me for my honesty, quite a lot actually. It strikes me as worrying that there was such surprise at someone actually returning their extra change.

How would that cashier benefit from the extra 20 in her till anyway? It's not like cashiers get to pocket the difference if their drawer ends up being more than it's supposed to be.

I'm guessing this cashier was overly vigilant and thought you were trying to pull a quick change scam on her.

I'm guessing the plan is that it won't be there at the end of the shift.
