    Timeshare scam for the win! Or lose. Whatever.

    I just got a call saying I was a grand prize winner of a luxurious 5 day 4 night vacation, and press 1 for information. Silly me, I pressed 1 for information. I was then connected to a guy who said he wanted to send me to Costa Rica for 5 days 4 nights for only $99 per person.
    I told him I wasn't interested.
    He told me all about the hotel, the services, and the wonderful things to do. Not interested.

    He offered me 5 days and 4 nights in Cancun in ADDITION to Costa Rica. Not interested. He then offered me 2 day passes to Disney World and Universal Studios and 5 days 4 nights in Orlando. Not interested.
    He then put me on hold and I got transferred to another guy who goes "I hear you're very interested in our vacation package!" I'm like "No, not really."
    The guy tells me all about the discounts and sends me to the website on my computer and tells me to print out the guarantee. (I didn't.)

    He then asks me if I want to charge it to Visa or Mastercard. I go "Neither, I'm really not interested." (At this point I was curious as to how long they would continue the call.) He then adds on 4 days and 3 nights in Vegas! As I'm telling him once again I'm not interested, he HANGS UP ON ME! How rude! I'm glad I didn't take their crummy vacation!

    Seriously, I was trying to be polite. He could have said "Well, I'm sorry you don't want to accept this wonderful offer, and I hope you have good luck in your endeavours in the future. Goodbye." How hard is that? Oh, and it was mentioned several times that all I would have to do is attend a seminar on buying timeshares every morning in the hotel, and there was NO OBLIGATIONS.

    My mom kept saying I should have hung up right away. Darn this politeness to scammers I was born with. I would have hung up on him if I had known he would hang up on me.

      heh one time i was offered either a trip to vegas, 2000& shopping spree or a new digital camera.


      I told them I dont like to gamble, I have everything I need and I just got myself a nice new camera.

      She responed with a sort of 'erm.....uh.....erk *click*'

          I have to agree. While we don't condone being needlessly rude to telemarketers here, mainly because some of our members are or have been telemarketers, the consensus is that if they get rude first, are obvious scammers, or refuse to take a polite "no" for an answer, then the gloves come off.

            I didn't have anything better to do, so I decided to hear what they had to say. Also, I'm incessantly polite, and I hate just hanging up on someone. When I was saying "I'm not interested" I was trying to end the conversation. At least at the beginning. It got so long that after a while I started to wonder how long they would try to sell me, and how they would eventually end it, since I wasn't. I found that out! But my mom kept saying the same thing "Just hang up on them!".

              hm...you could always try to scam a scammer by asking for a manager and then flipping out when they won't give you one...pretend like you really want it but want to talk to a manager and now you're all sad...then pretend like you're a suspicious paranoid agoraphobic...

                Just hang up. I was a telemarketer once (hawking magazines for the Time-Warner empire) and we were rated on the basis of sales per hour. We prefer being hung up on over pitching to someone not interested in our product.
                I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

                    No,. this was an affinity program with Special Olympics--specifically that venerable organization got a cut. Furthermore, the agency did not accept that kind of business.

                      True enough in most cases.

                      In this case the telemarketer in the OP apparently preferred pitching the product to someone who cleary stated she wasn't interested to hanging up.

                      The OP didn't make them stay on the phone, they freely chose to stay on the phone instead of hanging up.
                      The best karma is letting a jerk bash himself senseless on the wall of your polite indifference.

                        Well, we can't know that for certain.

                        There have been a few people here who worked in that field that have mentioned that they aren't allowed to hang up until a certain number of pitches were made, and I'm pretty sure one person mentioned that they weren't allowed to hang up at all.

                        I can't possibly imagine how that would make for a higher sales percentage, but nobody ever said that upper management is always on the ball. Hell, sometimes they can't even find the ball.

                          I can guess I can understand him getting pissed since he was trying to convince me of something I didn't want, and I kept saying so, but he could have said goodbye. When he hung up on me, any doubt it was a scam went out the window.

                            but...if someone clearly doesn't get the chance to say they're not interested and the person keeps INSISTING....what's the point in being mad when they start getting angry and saying quite clearly GO AWAY?!

                              No way he had any right to be pissed at you, AT ALL. You didn't lie to him. You didn't mislead him. And you are under no obligation, either moral or legal, to hang up first. If his boss won't let him hang up after you say "no," that's on his boss, not on you.
