My mall has a movie theater. Security does regular walk-throughs, chats with the ushers, etc. I was talking with one usher I know pretty well, he is the nicest guy, loves his job and is friendly to everyone.
I was commenting on the irritation I've had lately, because every time EVERY EVERY TIME I go to their theater, there are people talking, phoning, and texting. Never mind the signs and the screen at the start of the movie. He told me the following:
He was doing a theater check and saw a woman in the front bottom row with her phone out; so the screen was glowing in the faces of the entire audience. He asked her if she could put her phone away. She said no. He asked her if she could take the call outside then. Her boyfriend/husband puts his hands on the usher's shoulder and shoves him away, telling him to leave them alone. The usher reported it to his manager, but nothing happened. After the movie the couple complained to the same manager that the usher had told them to put the phone away. Guess what? The couple got free tickets and an apology.
This was just one of several incidents this usher has had after telling people to put their phones away, stop talking, etc. They complain and, depending on the manager, get free tickets. What the )^%$%%&!! IS WRONG with management!?
I also commented on the no oversized bags and no food policy. Guess what? Customers wont let the ushers check their bags, or refused no to return their bags to their cars and get let into the theater anyway. Customers come-in holding subs, pretzals, bottles of soda, etc. And the ushers stop them. Then the customers demand to speak with a manager and 9 times out of 10 the manager lets them in with all that food. I've seen this happen... so did the 5 people in line behind that customer holding their 30$ worth of popcorn, soda and candy, staring in disbelief. What is the point of even having the ushers???
I told this usher that it's not going to be long before there is a serious fight or altercation about these policies or lack there-of and that his managers will have to crack-down on things the first time someone gets hurt, or threatens a lawsuit or discrimination. He agreed completely.
These are reasons that I hate going to this theater, and only go if someone else REALLY wants to see a movie. I am sorely tempted to write a letter to their corporate office.
