  • Movie Theater Ignores Policies!

My mall has a movie theater. Security does regular walk-throughs, chats with the ushers, etc. I was talking with one usher I know pretty well, he is the nicest guy, loves his job and is friendly to everyone.

I was commenting on the irritation I've had lately, because every time EVERY EVERY TIME I go to their theater, there are people talking, phoning, and texting. Never mind the signs and the screen at the start of the movie. He told me the following:

He was doing a theater check and saw a woman in the front bottom row with her phone out; so the screen was glowing in the faces of the entire audience. He asked her if she could put her phone away. She said no. He asked her if she could take the call outside then. Her boyfriend/husband puts his hands on the usher's shoulder and shoves him away, telling him to leave them alone. The usher reported it to his manager, but nothing happened. After the movie the couple complained to the same manager that the usher had told them to put the phone away. Guess what? The couple got free tickets and an apology.

This was just one of several incidents this usher has had after telling people to put their phones away, stop talking, etc. They complain and, depending on the manager, get free tickets. What the )^%$%%&!! IS WRONG with management!?

I also commented on the no oversized bags and no food policy. Guess what? Customers wont let the ushers check their bags, or refused no to return their bags to their cars and get let into the theater anyway. Customers come-in holding subs, pretzals, bottles of soda, etc. And the ushers stop them. Then the customers demand to speak with a manager and 9 times out of 10 the manager lets them in with all that food. I've seen this happen... so did the 5 people in line behind that customer holding their 30$ worth of popcorn, soda and candy, staring in disbelief. What is the point of even having the ushers???

I told this usher that it's not going to be long before there is a serious fight or altercation about these policies or lack there-of and that his managers will have to crack-down on things the first time someone gets hurt, or threatens a lawsuit or discrimination. He agreed completely.

These are reasons that I hate going to this theater, and only go if someone else REALLY wants to see a movie. I am sorely tempted to write a letter to their corporate office.

I know those spineless managers. I have worked with those spineless managers. Their excuse is "Those customers will just call corporate and get free passes and an apology anyway." SO WHAT? I follow policy because, you know, that's my job.

I kick out people who assault my staff. I kick out people who whine and complain about bringing their own food and ignore the signs on the door saying DON'T DO THAT. I kick out people who pay $10.50 to apparently talk on the phone and text.

If they want to bitch to corporate after that, it's out of my hands. And if corporate wants to bitch to me about "offending" a customer, I will simply point out that I was following the policies that THEY SET.

    So far, I haven't heard a word

But please, do call and complain. Sounds like that theatre has an excess of spineless managers.

when i went there the vid showed the cell-phone yappers being shot with a semi-automatic...

That's one of my biggest peeves about my fellow movie-goers.

Who the hell pays these outgrageous movie prices to just sit there and text and talk for two hours?

It's a damn treat for me to go to the movies, a treat after a long week at work....not because I have nowhere else to text or talk.

A theatre that lets in that much outside food isn't going to be around long. Mark my words, when concession sales tank hard, they'll wonder why they're failing, get ripped apart by corp, and then the entire place will either enter a death spiral, or the management will be flipped.

A slightly immoral thought, why not complain to the manager next time. Why let the SCs get all the apologies and free tickets?

That first part made my blood boil! A guy assaults the usher and gets free stuff? So I can be a complete asshole and get rewarded for it while perfectly nice peoplee like the usher get crapped. There is something seriously, seriously wrong here.

Don't they know that customers like that aren't worth keeping?

Yes, no, maybe. The only explanation I can give for dishing out free tickets to the guy who assaulted the usher is that the manager knew the corporate suits above him would fold, and give the guy his apology and free tickets, and reprimand or fire him.

That's the way it is in some companies. If a customer complains to corporate, do whatever it takes to make them happy. Have policies for the peons to follow, but they're really only for the nice people who follow policies.

If this company wants to wow customers and go right into Chapter 11 doing so, that's their business. Concessions are where movie theaters make their profit, so they're just screwing themselves by letting people bring food in.

A guy at work complained about people that would park in the fire lane at a local grocery store. The manager said that if he did somethign about it, those people would complain. to whcih guy at work responds, "Well I'm a customer and I'm complaining".

The same goes for the theater. for every one of those customers that complains about keeping a cell phone on, there are a 100 customers that would prefer that they would shut the hell up. But sadly, those 100 customers are the ones that are wired correctly and wouldn't think to bitch. whereas the one person isn't and would stoop to complaining if told to shut up.

Actually, Century Rio here allows you to bring in outside food and their business isn't suffering one bit.

And they're the exception. A theatre lives and dies by its concession sales. You need to have either really low overhead, or a lot of traffic to get away with allowing that to be undercut.

                      Or jack up ticket prices.

I know that my local theatre isn't as strict about the food policy because of the sheer number of people that go there. It's impossible to keep tabs.

What I do know however, is that unless it's typical movie food, such as lollies, popcorn (can be the movie one or not), plastic bottles of soft drink etc. food isn't allowed to be brought in and particularly in the Gold Class area (a more luxurious area).

So instead of making 99 customers happy and 1 customer pissed, they're making 1 customer happy and 99 customers pissed? Ya way to prioritize.

when i saw 2012 a few weeks ago, the theater was full of idiots. people texting, twittering, talking, coming and going every few minutes and being generally annoying. and of course, i'm not one to complain. but i totally should have. coulda gotten free tickets, apparently...

which is another thing that really gets me. whey the hell are corporate offices so damned spineless?! they just bend over and take it and it pisses me off soooo much it makes my blood boil. we had a customer complain that we were out of something. my manager told them to get there earlier if they want any. they complained to corporate and got a $10 gift card. it reinforces bad behavior. it makes people think that it's perfectly acceptable to be a total asshat and ruin every one else's day. people will continue to be morons until someone snaps and opens fire with an automatic weapon upon a crowd of asshat customers. and then they'll all get apologies and gift cards. "oh i'm sorry you got what you deserved and were shot in the knee caps when you were being a moron and texting during a movie/using an out of date coupon/being a general neanderthal. here have money."

As a few people on here have suggested, corporations need a skeptic. Just one person to say no and why it should be no. For instance one of the common corporate cheerleading slogans is, 'The customer is always right". Someone should be able to jump on that one in a heartbeat. Maybe if corporations started tallying up the amount of money they are losing from this spinelessness, they might take heed. Maybe they should realize there are some customers you don't want.
