  • Yet another reason why I can't stand UPS

I am not a fond fan of UPS. Honestly, I could do without them, but since we have a national contract with them, I have no choice but to use them at work.

Yesterday a package was supposed to go to our supply office on another floor, but for some reason whoever was supposed to man the door didn't answer. So the person who was to receive the package bitched to UPS rather than just let me call the driver and ask him what happened. This started a chain reaction which somehow ended up with the hub manager saying that the driver was not allowed to read me the names of the packages being dropped off; I still don't know how it got to that point, as it wasn't even part of the problem.

Yes, you read that right. He's not allowed to read me the names. He is supposed to drop them off and move on to his next stop.

I called the hub manager who didn't care in the least that all the drivers we'd been doing this with for the past 5 plus years did it without an issue because I was tied to the front desk. It didn't matter that I would have to leave where I sat to go and check the packages to see who they belonged to and leave the phone unattended. I was inconviencing the driver by making a demand. I should let him do his job.

So I've told the driver that he can just drop the packages and if it's something for another suite, I'll just call and let them know. Because you see, once I sign for however many packages, no matter if they aren't ours, I'm accepting that they are indeed ours (I really like this logic).

The thing that irritated me the most was the hub manager telling me I didn't know how to do my job by daring to make the UPS driver do something that wasn't in his job description. I guess doing his job and making sure the packages get to where they belong isn't in his job description anymore.

    Interesting.

Our UPS driver is awesome, shows up like clockwork every day, and rarely if ever makes a mistake.

My problem is with FedEx. I had to schedule pickups for the same package 3 times, even though he made deliveries on the days when he failed to pick up the outgoing package. I get how it might be possible to miss a pickup if you're not otherwise stopping someplace, but when you're there and they tell you they have a package that was scheduled for pick up?

Also, the Fed Ex driver sometimes delivers to the front desk, sometimes to the Receiver out back, and sometimes just drops it on a shelf next to the loading dock. With no rhyme or reason as to why one place and not the other.

I must admit to some confusion with the general dislike of UPS. I've never had an issue with them, and I have to arrange for a pickup at the depot quite often due to my schedule. My items usually get there earlier than projected, and in good repair.

Fed Ex is the one I dread in my area. I actually had to argue for a depot pickup the last time, as they were claiming it wasn't possible! I'm really hoping that was just an ignorant worker, as they were five other people there for package pickup when I went to get my package. I just generally have bad past experiences with FedEx.

UPS has a bad rep with me due to many many issues over the past years, such as:
          • Telling me that my sister's address doesn't exist, yet she has no problems getting her mail or packages from FedEx. Then saying that the USPS gets their addresses from UPS, and that my sister's house, which has been there for well over 40 years was not put in the system. Then suddenly blaming my sister by saying that she had to have moved her house there. Yeah, the Sallisaw, OK drivers and hub managers are idiots. Real idiots.

          • Claiming that my parents weren't home when my dad was sitting on the front porch and the driver paused for a moment, looked at the house then drove on by. No "sorry we missed you" notice was left, yet it was scanned into the pad.

          • When I was working my first job, the driver would only pick up the first few boxes, then say he couldn't pick up the rest since he we were only allowed so many pick ups a week, and so many boxes per pick up.

Don't get me wrong. The driver isn't the problem here at all. It's one of the hub managers who I think is on a power trip. The driver has offered to find out who is over this manager so I can lodge a complaint. This is not over by a long shot.

I once had to send 3 parcels out, and decided to do so via UPS. They had a van parked outside the building I worked in, so I brought them there, gave them my credit card #, and walked away knowing the packages were in good hands.

I later found out I'd been charged a $9.75 pick-up fee. For each of the 3 parcels.

Contacted UPS. Talked with them over the phone. Oh, they'll fix it for me. Oh, wait. No, they won't fix it for me, can't process a refund. I'll have to complain to my credit card company.

After a month, I was able to do a charge-back for the fees.

I don't hate UPS as a company, but I've got to admit that there are some real "winners" who work there. Take our UPS guy. He constantly tries to deliver the neighbors packages to us and gets pissed when I tell him that he is at the wrong business. Whenever we get a shipment of books (usually around 10 boxes) he likes to randomly pile them by the door. I've asked him to not do it and he completely ignores me when I ask!! Today he tried to pull that sh*t with my boss. He was literally THROWING the boxes on the ground. My boss asked, "Please don't do that." Ignored. Then my boss YELLED at him "stop throwing my f*cking boxes!!!" and he actually stopped. Doubt he'll remember to not do it anymore. Usually I sign "YOU FAIL" instead of my name but I don't believe he's ever noticed....

But I'm sure there are good UPS workers out there... somewhere

If you have a national contract, then you have a representative at HQ to handle all of your problems. Talk to them, they will help you.

And this is where it all went sideways. This guy pissed off the local hub manager, and so now he's being a douche to you guys. You need to talk to your corporate rep with UPS to get this straightened out.

This is usually due to changes in local zoning. I can say with absolute certainty that we've had at least 10 times as many USPS shipments claim an address didn't exist than UPS shipments, and we ship more by UPS than USPS.

They all do that. UPS, FedEx, and USPS. It's all the luck of who's doing the driving that day. Before I started having everything delivered to my workplace, I used to go out to get the mail (the dogs next door would let me know the carrier was coming) and get handed a call tag because the driver was too lazy to actually carry the half-lb parcel in her bag. She was super-lazy. I actually liked when we had a sub, 'cause they were always willing to do more.

As I said, talk to your corporate rep on this. You have a contract, so you have a rep. Don't keep it local. Take advantage of your contract.

                Complain. To corporate.

That kind of attitude is going to cost them money and business, and it's not like they don't have hundreds of people knocking on their doors to work for them.

The UPS guy I have to deal with is a real creeper. Always late with deliveries, refuses to pick anything up and makes me come to the truck to pick up boxes of patterns. He only ever delivers maybe 3 boxes to me at a time. I always get the feeling I need to take a shower after seeing him.

My Fedex guy, on the other hand, is not only a real cutie, he regularly delivers upwards of 50 packages to me, is there before the store opens, or calls when he's going to be late, not only unloads the stuff but brings it in for me and puts it where I want it (I'm a bit picky about my back room). I had a manager from another store in one morning and he said, within earshot of my Fedex guy, that, as a new RTL, I needed to develop a better relationship with my Fedex driver. He looks at me, winks, and says "so, drinks tonight are on the company, then?"

I think most of this isn't necessarily the company per se but more the drivers themselves. I love the UPS driver that delivers to my apartment but the Fedex guy knocks then leaves, sometimes leaving my package by my front door but more often then not I have to go pick it up.

It's almost always the drivers. That's why I always complain when I get a sucky one.

At work, both the UPS & FedEx drivers are outstanding. So is the FedEx Ground guy. The UPS guy for the apartment, though, is iffy, and I can't seem to manage to get my family to deliver to my work instead.
