Every year this time, the local newsrag puts out a little childrens' activity book which includes letters to Santa written and submitted by local children. I always like to look at this when it comes. Guess I never grew up in that regard.
Included in the book was this letter, written by somebody claiming to be 14 years old, from some town I've never heard of existing in Cheeselandialand:
Dear Santa:
I want my Helio to be turned on for service so that I can text and talk to my friends, and for emergencies. But what I want more than anything else, Santa, is for all the unemployed teenagers and adults to be able to earn the money they need or desire during our economic hard times this Christmas. This website (URL) has an opportunity that is 'Free,' with Zero investment, and they never have to spend a dime, Santa. Anyone who is 13 years and older can earn as much money as they can. Santa please get this website to all the jobless, homeless, hungry and less fortunate in our world.
Thank you and God bless you.
For shits and giggles, I typed in the URL, and went to a webpage featuring a scantily-clad woman holding up a handful of dollar bills, so you know it's legit
, and announcing that you can make $43,945.75 in 30 to 90 days with zero investment. Coincidentally, it is hosted by somebody with the same last name as the letter writer.
TL;DR version: Somebody used my local newsrag's "Letters to Santa" book to advertise a scam of some sort, and the newsrag published the letter without even checking into it.
And people wonder why I think our local newsrag is useful only as fish wrapping, birdcage lining, and puppy piddle-training pads.
