We went to see Sherlock Holmes over Christmas, and the theater was way oversold for that particular show (we and about 50 other people had valid tickets, but there were no seats left). All 8 of us were able to get a free reticketing for the next show, which was fine (and even though there was still a line, we got there early enough to get the seats we wanted).
The thing my dad didn't get was, why oversell in the first place? Is it like the airlines where they think people aren't going to show up? For that matter, he thinks (and I concur) that the extreme front-row seats should be done away with as nobody can see anything anyway."I am quite confident that I do exist."
"Excuse me, I'm making perfect sense. You're just not keeping up." The Doctor

The same crap happened to us. In CHURCH. If we went to a holy day (weekday) service, there was one usher who would consistently try to make us move. Not just budge up to make room on the bench, but literally move places. We'd arrive early for the service and he would be there every time. No matter where we chose to sit.
Finally, we had enough and when he came over the last time to try to make us move, we replied, "No, thank you. We got here early so as to not have to stand, and we are staying here." My Parents are always with us, and I am not having them shunted around so we end up having to stand.
Either my brother or I would give up our seat to an elderly or handicapped person, but when the usher would do this, the church would still be almost empty.
Unfortunately for the usher, the last time he pulled the stunt of shifting people, I was the reader at the next service and mentioned it to the pastor, politely, but just wondering why someone would shift around people in a still-empty church. Somehow, this year, it all changed and he was nothing but kind and solicitous this Christmas.

My mum had something of that sort happen once in church; not her church, but when she went to one on holiday. She just said in a loud voice, "It's not very Christian to try and force someone to move away from their husband," and the usher quit it. I mean, honestly. I really don't see why people have to be moved around in church at all; and this particular one was a giant church with enough room to fit about three times the congregation. Despite this one incident, my mum was happy with the service and so was my dad.
