I really gotta wonder what goes through peoples heads when they make these decisions. It's like they wanted to alienate as many people as possible.
    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $

The apartment building probably contributes more in property taxes to the city than the pub does.

That totally sucks. We had something similar happen near here - there was a speedway outside of town that was very popular - both stock car races and "crash-to-pass" - it had been there for more than 30 years and was hugely popular. Well some well-to-do people decided to build a housing complex nearby, KNOWING ahead of time that the speedway was a noisy place to be on weekends, and then they complain about the noise after they've moved in, and the city council shuts the speedway down. I hate people who do things like this.
    See the above.

We have developers who LOVE building lots of really EXPENSIVE condos along the waterfront here. Know what else runs along the waterfront? TRAINS! I live about two miles away and even I can hear them going through at 3am. Of course, the trains blowing their horns is a big safety regulation, I think it may even be federal, so despite all the complaints from the condo dwellers (who were apparently oblivious to the train tracks RIGHT in front of the condos before they moved in!) the trains keep coming and blowing their horns!

That really sucks about that pub. They stopped playing at 10? The neighbor who complained is just being a complete a**! (Personally I'd love to have a pub right across the street...saves me from shelling out for a taxi ride home!)

BS like this is why I'm really glad the towns and cities are passing "Right to Farm" laws around here. Farm smells funny on a hot summer day? Tough. You don't like the roosters crowing in the morning? Too bad, so sad. Get earplugs or something.

"I was here first. This is my piece of dirt. You're rambling don't rattle me."

Seriously, this has been a farm for over a century, and my father is the 3rd generation of this family to work it. I'm evilly waiting for when the condos that were built just above his hay field sell. I'm almost praying for brats that whine when he chops down his field and leaves the grass out to dry.
Any day you're looking down at the dirt instead of up at the dirt is a good day.

I was thinking that someone on the council is probably connected with the apartment developer somehow. That is usually how these things go. Hopefully maybe that pub can re-open in the future.

That is one of my Pet Peeves.. If you are going to move next to something that already existed, and it makes noise, it should be *YOUR* problem, and not theirs.

Allot of short tracks are getting shutdown because of that.. When a majority of these track were built in the 50s and 60s, they were located out in the middle of no where. Over time, development happened, and people who bought homes near the established race track would piss and moan and get them closed down, or basically nutured to the point, that they can't operate. Track owners, trying to be accommodating will put in Muffler rules, or set up curfews for the track, but they don't help. People still bitch.

On a side note , we had the mayor suggest for relieving the problem of noise complaints from neighbors of the local airport was by selling homes nearby at low cost to deaf people.

And The city reelected him twice after this suggestion was made.

Well, it looks like the only thing that can be done now is to vote all the bastard councilmen out of office (assuming they are voted in). You don't listen to your electorate, you get voted out.

Some places that would actually work. I know that one of the big banks preferentially hired deaf people to work in their printing room, and they managed to do it legally. I believe it was along the lines of "being deaf makes it easier to do the job, since you need sign to communicate there, and even good hearing protection won't keep the noise from driving you crazy".

As for complaining about something that you moved in next to, I have to agree that it's stupid. When it's put in place after you move in it's different. (I know someone who almost bought a house with a wonderful lot behind it. She then discovered that the 407 Expressway was going to go in that wonderful empty space...)

I'm not sure which pisses me off more -- the fact that the people who actually lived there told the powers that be that they didn't want the apartments, and were basically told "Fuck you, we're doing it anyway!", or that people moved in and complained about something that was there long before they were.

On a note somewhat related to the latter, back in the early 90s I had tickets to a concert featuring some of my favorite bands -- I think it was Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, and maybe one other band I'm not remembering. It was in Hershey, and since this was long before they built the Giant Center, it was to be at the Hershey Park Arena.

Apparently the residents pissed and moaned about the upcoming concert, and it ended up being cancelled. I didn't find out until the day of the concert (although I have to admit, that's better than the other time I didn't find out until I drove two hours to where it was supposed to be.)

There had been concerts at the Arena for many years, and I'm sure most of the people who bitched were people who moved there after the fact, knowing full well that they sometimes have concerts. I understand not liking certain music, and I know what I listen to is not for everyone. But if a place is going to have concerts, there's going to be a time or two that it's going to be a type of music you don't like.
Alice in Chains. Clash of the titans tour. Awesome!

Something similar happened here. Thankfully it didn't work.

People move into some posh condo's on the Boston Harbor waterfront. All is well until they realize Old Ironsides fires it's cannons twice daily.

If they are dumb enough to move across the street from a bar and complain about it, they are dumb enough to brag about it.
                    Absolutely.

I can totally picture this guy swaggering around, telling anybody who'll listen (and probably plenty of people who won't) the story of how he got that pub shut down.

All the while, he'll be thinking, "Hey, look at me, everybody! Look at what a big shot I am! That bar was supposed to be hot stuff in this town, but I got it shut down just like that! I'll bet all the locals are really impressed with me - I'm new here, and I'm really taking this town by storm! Wow, the next business better think twice before they cross me!"

I hate when this kind of thing happens. I live in the countryside, but I work in Austin - a city that prides itself on its live music venues. The whole place is already gearing up for the SXSW music festival. The entire downtown/warehouse district area has a very cool bohemian feel to it.... The problem is that it got so popular, they started building all these condos and residences right near the bars and concert venues; everyone moved in to be next to the scene and then started complaining that it was too loud. So a city whose entire reputation depends on local bands - that takes so much pride in being "the live music capital of the world" is cracking down on the owners and musicians because some people want to have their cake (live downtown right where everything's happening) and eat it too (never, ever be inconvenienced by loud music or streets closed for concerts).

Ugh, I hate complainers like that. In my opinion, those types of laws should have grandfather clauses automatically built in; something akin to "If a business can prove that there hasn't been a significant change in its environment (noise levels, smell levels, etc...) from before the homes were built, than the complaint and any changes because of the complaint are nullified. The business, with everything it puts out, is to be considered a 'preexisting condition'.

Fredericton, NB, has its horse race track and exibition grounds close to downtown, in the middle of a fairly residential neighborhood which has built up after the track and grounds were set up. (The grounds have been there for a century and change IIRC; much longer than the houses). Every year, when the FREX happens (Fredericton Exhibition) the midway sets up on the grounds and there are complaints.

And just last year, a group arranged a rock weekend at the race track. It was a concert weekend with a lot of local acts and headlined "Live" and "The Black Crowes". The promotors made sure they had all the right permits, and even made sure there was a 10PM curfew for the groups, and to hire extra police officers to patrol the neighbourhoods around the race track, and the people there still complained incessantly about it. (While the concert was a great idea, the weather was horrible for the weekend. I'm not sure if they're going to try it again this year or not yet)

The pub owner could probably sue the town council and ask the court for judicial review of the music licence decision. It probably won't help at this point though.

Residents of the nearby village, knowing full well where they were moving to, have complained about the noise of people screaming on the rollercoasters, the noise of the fireworks and the ammount of traffic going through the place to get to the park.

I don't have anything that closeby, but the bar I go to regularly is sort of within walking distance (takes me about 20 minutes.) I get some exercise, and I don't have to worry about getting too FUBARed to drive back. Although one time I vaguely remember staggerring all over the place on the way back, after a night of 8 beers, 2 shots, and no food. I felt like a train hit me the next day.

I hope he ends up like the 1955 mayor from Back to the Future. A lot of people probably don't know this, and I didn't realize it either until I checked the cast and character list for the movie. Shortly after Marty McFly arrives in 1955 and heads into town, there's a sound truck announcing a re-election campaign for "Mayor Red Thomas." Apparently he lost the re-election, and ran into a series of other unfortunate events and ended up "Red" the homeless guy, who muttered about "Crazy drunk drivers!", and then "Crazy drunk pedestrian" in the second movie.

The plant (factory) I work in is surrounded by residential, despite that we are zoned industrial (in fact we built a good 3/4 of the houses 20 years ago).

Once a year we get someone who either shows up or calls or e-mails bitching about us being "too loud too early".

Thing is to be respectful of our neighbors we have asked everyone we deal with to not start before 6 AM. The most you're going to hear is a back-up alarm from a truck in the middle of the night.

A few months ago we had a biohazard issue (I posted about it here) and the clean-up went on overnight.

The police showed up and quickly left once they saw what was going on.

We got an e-mail asking "how many more nights of sleep will we have to lose?" Our response was "none, and for the record we haven't worked overnight in over 15 years".

Owner got a call on his cell phone (somehow) from some irate woman yelling about how she's going to have us shut down. He told her that "we were here first, why didn't you look around the neighborhood before you bought a house?"

People will take any excuse to complain, and then escalate it 100 times worse than it really was.

It was Gallagher...About 6 months after the comments were made, Gallagher had his show in town. When he did that bit, the audience roared to the point that we were almost rolling. When it happened, Gallagher had a bit of a stun look on his face, then someone in one of the front rows had to explain to Gallagher why it got a bigger reaction then normal.
