  • They threw away what!?!

Today we got a call from one of our big (national) jewelry stores. They wanted to know when the trash compactors had last been emptied. Why? Because apparently they threw away a box of jewelery that was MEANT to be mailed-out for repair. As in, jewelry that customers had entrusted to them and paid them to fix! Luckily, the compactors had been emptied several days before this happened, so it's been organized that someone from the store will have to go with the company when they collect the compactor to be emptied at the dump and sort-through the items there, as we can't let them crawl into the machine here. As it is, the store will have to pay for the extra dumping.

The kicker? They only realized that they were missing the jewelry A WEEK after they threw it out! They are so lucky the machines hadn't been emptied.

The suck? They never informed ANY of their customers that their jewelry might have gone missing. My coworker just happened to bring her rings in to be repaired the day before they threw-out the box. Her wedding and engagement rings with a very special cut stone! If she didn't work here, I doubt she ever would have learned what had happened.

What sucks the most is that my coworker told me that in the time she's worked here, this is the 3rd or 4th time this store has accidentally thrown away jewelry! I told her she should find a new store!

But, we won't know if the jewelry is actually in the trash until it gets emptied. Or if her rings were actually in the box; apparently, they can't give her a yes or no.

Wow....that's just asking for trouble. Just wait until they throw away the engagement ring that's been in the family for years.

So how broken is this jewelry that it's mistaken for trash? For that matter, how crummy is this jewelry. That is all.

What other types of places use that compactor? I can just see the fun some poor employee could have crawling in yards of compacted, maggot infested fast food stuff or what ever else in in their.

I know we had one employee who filled a trash can up with damaged merch, that was supposed to be eirth marked down or sent to the mfgr fro credit and left in in front of the compactor. Then got mad it was thrown out. They were a manager.

It's not junk jewlery, the store only deals with real items; these are heirlooms, rings, necklaces. Coworker's set was a white gold band and a yellow gold band with a 1/2 carat oval-cut diamond.

And EVERY STORE'S trash goes into the compactors; so it's a mishmash of pizza toppings, old product, broken glass, and bathroom trash.

You know, this makes me very glad I can't wear jewelry in the first place!

In my old office a few people got into trouble for leaving case files sitting on top of the trash can in thier office. The cleaning crew thought they were trash and threw them out.

I did this once. Not files, but some overpriced special brochure paper. Learned a lesson, but boss didn't get mad at me.
