Today we got a call from one of our big (national) jewelry stores. They wanted to know when the trash compactors had last been emptied. Why? Because apparently they threw away a box of jewelery that was MEANT to be mailed-out for repair. As in, jewelry that customers had entrusted to them and paid them to fix! Luckily, the compactors had been emptied several days before this happened, so it's been organized that someone from the store will have to go with the company when they collect the compactor to be emptied at the dump and sort-through the items there, as we can't let them crawl into the machine here. As it is, the store will have to pay for the extra dumping.
The kicker? They only realized that they were missing the jewelry A WEEK after they threw it out! They are so lucky the machines hadn't been emptied.
The suck? They never informed ANY of their customers that their jewelry might have gone missing. My coworker just happened to bring her rings in to be repaired the day before they threw-out the box. Her wedding and engagement rings with a very special cut stone! If she didn't work here, I doubt she ever would have learned what had happened.
What sucks the most is that my coworker told me that in the time she's worked here, this is the 3rd or 4th time this store has accidentally thrown away jewelry! I told her she should find a new store!
But, we won't know if the jewelry is actually in the trash until it gets emptied. Or if her rings were actually in the box; apparently, they can't give her a yes or no.
