  • Taking tsumani scare a little far...

Recently, we were under a tsumani advisory. Guy at the casino where my friend works called up their security podium and INSISTED they evacuate the casino. He was absolutely livid that the casino would stay open during a tsunami advisory and was giving casino security a lot of hell about it.

A few things wrong with his request:

    1) The San Juan Islands in front of us would absorb virtually all the impact if there were a major tsunami event. However, more importantly:

    2) I don't think you can even see the ocean from this casino. Maybe from some of the upper levels of the hotel. It's pretty far inland. If a tsunami were big enough to reach it, we'd have a lot bigger issues, like Armageddon, to deal with.

To play devil's advocate a bit, it is possible for a tsunami to affect areas not in sight of the ocean. Altitude is an all-important factor. If the height above sea level isn't more than a few feet, the tsunami can have devastating effects over a mile inland. Not knowing the casino involved, though, I am not in a position to say what would have happened. If it's situated on a hill, you're fine. It's not like a hurricane, after all.

It is situated on a hill, and it's at least two miles inland...I think even closer to three. Around here, the landscape tends to slope up fairly quickly from the water, so pretty much everything that's not right on the water is going to be elevated.

What made this guy really sucky is that despite casino staff explaining this to him, he would not back down.

That's when you pick the bastard up, tie him to a stake...go plant his ass in the sand by the ocean...and then wait for the supposed tsunami. Just to see him freak out for a few hours would be worth it

Local islands actually wouldn't be very useful to protect against what could be a severe increase the water level.

I may be 8 miles inland, but where I live is still only about 30 feet above sea level. A good, sustained swell in the local seawater would play merry havoc with all of the local waterways and sewer systems.

Quick question, was the casino holding him hostage and not allowing him to leave? Or was he an employee who didn't want to report to work for safety reasons? Those are the only two cases where I can see him really having any reason to complain they are open. I know if we get bad snow here and if they want me to come in for a 3hr shift Im not doing it. Because if the roads get bad enough it would tkae 2hrs of drive time in a truck that would take $9.50 of the $22 I would make.
I'm sorry reading is not a new concept it has been widely taught in our nation for at least the past 100 years. Please, learn to do it CORRECTLY before you become contagious.

He was just some random customer. No one holding him hostage. Actually, he phoned in, so he may not have even been in the casino.
