  • No, I don't work here

It seems like wearing a polo and khaki's equals "I work here."

I had an instance when I was wearing a red polo and light khakis while shopping at Sports Authority. The store colors were blue and black, not one red polo anywhere. Que a very redneckish man with 2 kids, roughly 12 and 14, who asks me a question. Since actual employees were everywhere, including one who was maybe 10 feet away, I made the assumption he was talking to him. I also figured this because he was physically behind me so there was no eye contact or anything to indicate I was acknowleding him.

I wasn't paying attention until he started to openly insult me behind my back, making comments about my possible sexual orientation and saying I was there to buy soccer equipment. I turned around and saw him and his children,

Me: Are you talking to me?
Rneck: Well duuuh! You have to be the rudest employee here, how 'bout I get you fired boy?

He then did the try-to-intimidate-with-close-proximity-machoism, only to realize I was about 1/2' taller than him, outweighed him by 80-100lbs, and was just plain physically larger than him.

Me: Why don't you try that? I bet you 100 bucks you can't do it - I don't work here.
Rneck: I THINK I WILL! [storms off muttering racially incorrect slurs]

I went back to my shopping, just waiting for it. It happened in less than 5 minutes when Redneck guy came back with the store's manager.

Rneck: HIM! I WANT THIS A$$ FIRED IMMEDIATELY! HE WAS INSULTING TO ME AND MY FAMILY!!!
Manager: Umm, sir, this gentelman is does not work here.
    Rneck: WHAT?!?
Me: Yeah, got my 100 bucks missy? (Well ok, now I was being a dick, but I think I earned it.)
Manager: He is not employeed by Sports Authority, and could you please lower your voice.
Rneck: But but, he ... he has a SHIRT ON!
Me: Several people wear polo shirts, and I even told you I didn't work here and all you did was call me gay and then insult my ethnicity - and you were wrong about that too It would be smart for you to leave NOW.

I can only imagine he reaced a level of clarity at that point because he looked around and noticed about 12 additional people glaring at him. These people also looked polish, which is probably the closest ethnicity I appear to be. Care to guess the slurs he was saying while seeking out the manager earlier?

He left, and the manager offered me a 10% discount on whatever I purchased for that visit.

This is not the first time polo's have gotten me in this type of situation, I had a incident at a local Blockbuster Video and a few other places and the results were the same. MrTim =1, SC =0.

Gee, I guess by that logic I'd work there too if I went to that particular store.

I dare you to wear that outfit to Target and see what happens.

I had a SC claim I worked at wal-mart. I was wearing jeans, unzipped winter jacket and a gray t-shirt and shopping with a few friends from school. I was pushing the cart, so that must mean I work their.

One of the most annoying things about working at Wal-Mart is that morons expect me to help them when I'm not at Wal-Mart. It's extremely rare, but it's happened.

Speaking of Wal-Mart, my work's uniform almost mirrors it.

I once went shopping at a Wal-mart after work for some new movies (Discount DVD rack!). Well, in less than five minutes, I had about eight people asking me where stuff was.

Boy, the looks on their faces were priceless. Yeah, my company may sound similar to Wal-Mart (I guess you can figure out where I work now ) but I, in fact, don't work here! Leave me alone!

One person asked me, "Are you sure?" I pointed at my nametag and he slithered off.

                  Good times, indeed.

A long while ago when I worked in the bar kitchen I was shopping at the local "every little helps" store while wearing a blue fleece jacket... part of the uniform at that store is a blue fleece jacket of a different style to the one I was wearing.

As I was standing on tippytoes trying to get a couple of items off a top shelf, I hears a voice asking where such & such (can't remember what) was. Obviously said, sorry, haven't a clue as I managed to snag the elusive item I was after.

She replied in a snotty voice "Well, you're not very good at your job then are you?"

As I turned round to pop the stuff in my trolley & the front of my nice colourful non-store t shirt came into view I told her I was excellent at my job, just didn't happen to be employed at the store!

Left her doing a rather good fish impression
                    Arp happens!

Just when I was getting used to yesterday, along came today.

Actually I mentioned a Blockbuster incident, and in that case I was wearing a blue polo, so I gave the Customer the benefit of the doubt and was polite - at first. She started calling me a liar and claiming that I was just trying to avoid her. The conversation was not nearly as amusing as my Sports Authority incident, but it ended the same way.

Maybe there should be some kind of innoculation for wearing shirts like that when you're out shopping. Sort of a Polo vaccine.

I think some people are just color blind and vision-impaired. Why else would you ask someone in jeans and a brown bomber jacket if they work at a store where the dress code is khakis and yellow shirts? Yeah, that happened to me this past winter.

I'm afraid I was quite impolite, what with giving them the most intense 'WTF' stare and saying, 'No ma'am, I don't work here'.

While doing phone surveys about the quality of insurance people got I would get questions about people's policies. Sorry, if I was able to answer those kind of questions I would have a better job then giving phone surveys.
