as was said, peaNUTS are not nuts, they are legumes.

I have one friend allergic to tree nuts but not peanuts, and another friend who is allergic to peanuts but not tree nuts.

Everyone I know who can have peanuts but not nuts, specifies "tree nuts", because they're always lumped in together. I'm sure that there isn't anyone ignorant enough to actually think that they're nuts, but the allergies seem to be commonly found together, and "no peanuts" is often referred to as (and always covered under) "nut-free".
