    I live near train crossings and busy freeways and other loud places.

    So long as it isn't directly outside my window, it takes no time at all to start just tuning all that out.

    And if you can't manage that, a little white noise (fans are great) or music will take care of it just fine.

      There's a crossing in Santa Fe where the tracks are on a diagonal across the--very busy--intersection. I can't recall if there are gates or not*;
      St. Francis and Cerrillos and there's not any gates. I hate that intersection. It's usually a nightmare. I can't see that the red light camera has done any good.

      I'm really surprised that there's not more wrecks, of any kind, there.

        That's the intersection I was talking about. They put a camera up?

          Yeah, Santa Fe put up 4 red light/speed cameras in 2008. Would it surprise you that they're all on Cerrillos?

            Nope. And I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if they accomplish absolutely nothing.

            One of the "games" on campus was to play chicken on St. Michael's or Cerrillos (whichever road had the worse traffic). Not only students but I'd see homeless guys doing it too

              There are quite a number of "skew" crossings in the UK. I think most of them have full barriers, so the main problem is people driving on GPS in the dark, who turn the wrong way at the wrong time and end up on the track. But most of them tend to realise this fairly quickly, because of the cattle guards and the sudden drop onto the ballast.

              There are also one or two places where the railway turns onto and folows the road for a short distance. The main one is I think in Weymouth, but that doesn't get much use any more. There's also a new one - though essentially reviving an old practice - where an "extended level crossing" is formed to allow a narrow-gauge railway to share a road bridge in Porthmadog. For obvious reasons, that one also gets full barriers.
