Truth in advertising laws. If an item is marked at a price that is reasonable to expect that item to be sold for, even if it was marked mistakenly, the store has to allow that price.

This is the reason that many pricing stickers are designed to pull apart into pieces if you remove them. So that industrious scammers can't simply put lower-priced tags on items and claim them as being mis-marked.

This is also why so many stores have stopped marking the product at all. Well, and the fact that it saves them tons of time and materials.

Items have to be marked here because that's part of the law as well. They've been trying to change that part of the law forever and I don't think it's going to happen anytime soon.

I don't know if it's the law in my state, or if it was just the policy where I used to work, but that's how it was done at my last retail job. Unfortunately, that meant that when someone like James the Wonder Idiot put a bunch of sale signs on the wrong items, the store lost out big time. And of course, the poor cashiers that got screamed at by the customers, and had to keep calling a manager for a void.

Well, no offense to anybody that shops/works at Wally World..but it IS Wally World. Be prepared for the worst, and you still won't be ready for what you can see/experience in Wally World. You are lucky you got out with your soul still intact .

Have some eggnoggy goodness and forget the place exists.

Like a couple others said, that's law. Even if an expired sale sign has been inadvertently left up. Found that out the hard way when I used to work at the Mart of K.
Does it still apply if the expired sale sign has the start/end dates of the sale printed on it (i.e. "SALE Reg. $19.99 now $14.99 valid Nov 12-19")? Would the store still be required to honour the $14.99 price outside the date window printed on the sign?

I don't think so. They've covered their backs with the dates - hence why stores have to put the dates, otherwise something could be valid forever. Coupons seem to be prone to that issue...and prone to people not reading said dates and then demanding the coupon price anyway.

I got a sweet deal on a new video game that way- they were supposed to be 60$, but were marked for 13.99.

With that large a price discrepancy, I can see that being considered too large a discount to be thought a reasonable price.

But I can also see a store just giving it to get rid of you, and then re-pricing everything on the shelf to avoid any hassle.

Poor auto employee, that CSM really did throw him under the bus. And he had to have been new, it's not hard to do a price override, and for something that small in a price discrepancy he didn't have to have a CSM override it.

which of course would mean his shitty day is all the more shittier for that reason alone. rough days for new guys are bad.

Yes, no, maybe. At the swamp we would honor the price. It's our mistake for not catching the expired sign or tag, and it keeps customer complaints to a minimum.

And we've been having to do this more often lately because ensuring ad signs are taken down at the right time has been given minimal importance. It used to be you didn't get to leave Saturday nights until the closing manager walked off the entire salesfloor to make sure all the expired signs were down. Now, everybody's out the door once it hits 10:00 and the last customer has left.
