not trying to thread jack but has anyone put down specific availability and then had it ignored?
A bit off-topic, but still quasi-pertaining to this:

I used temp agencies to help broaden my searches for employment and there was one thing I couldn't stand about having to use them. Having spent my time getting ready for these stinking temp agency interviews (hair styled and power-suit), driving all over creation to find their po-dunk bum-fuck office, spend at least an hour in each interview doing the same stupid tests (word, excel, accounting) and in the end they never bothered to pay attention to the REQUIREMENTS I listed (salary, benefits, etc.). It would drive me nuts that they'd call and say "Oh we have this great offer, 30 hours a week, $8 an hour, temporary/temp to perm position". I got tired of telling them the same damn thing... They're called requirements for a reason... they're not suggestions!

Some things that peeved/amused my manager and I at the jewelry store (kiosk)...

-- Please be able to correctly spell your current/previous employers, the position you held, etc.

-- (elaborating on the borrowed pen...) Do not fill out the application at our counter. There are plenty of tables in the food court if you absolutely must do it in the mall.

It's no wonder we had a hard time hiring people. My manager and I were really picky. Spelling errors, bad handwriting, erroneous information, etc. got your application filed away.

There was one lady who had admitedly had a conviction of a drug charge on her record. We never called her back. She called us back, mad as hell because she never got an interview. Some people just don't think.

At least she was honest. She ruined it by calling back, though.

Some new ones from my interview yesterday.

          1. Don't let your 1st question be "I need to know how much I will make"
          2. If I show you a drawing don't say "I can do that" and then look at me like I have two heads when I ask you to do it for me.
          3. I shouldn't have to give up step by step instructions as to how to draw a box with a bump out on AutoCAD.
          4. If I go through all the steps myself showing how it's done you shouldn't have to ask me how to do it again.
          5. Telling me this job would be a great oppurtunity for you is odd, but fine. Telling me (more than once especially) that it would be a great oppurtunity for me (the guy hiring you) to hire you is stupid.
          6. When I look at your resume and I see you have like 3 degrees (all in different things) and this is yet another new venture for you I wonder how long you will stay here.
          7. Telling me constantly that I would have to train you to do this job (no shit lady) is annoying. I've been doing this for 6 years, my boss for 40+ we know how to deal with new hires.
          8. When I tell you that I'm moving away from drafting and more into project managment don't ask me why. Really, it's not any of your business.

Yes this was all from one interview. The other guy didn't bother to show up

What about the other way around? I was told by a pet store nearby that they were hiring, and would be doing call backs the week after, and I was definitely on that list. I never got a call. The end of that week, I went in with Mom (she needed dog food) I found the manager I'd talked to, and asked "What the hell?" (politely) He told me, "We decided to go a different direction."
Without even so much as a courtesy interview?
And they've still got the sign up saying they're hiring. Bastards.

That pisses me off. If they say they will call, they should call. Even if they decided not to interview you, they should have called and told you that, since they said you were on "the list." It probably would have taken them all of 30 seconds. It's even worse when they've already interviewed you, you do all the follow up (thank you note, etc) and they say they will make a decision by X date, after X date you call because you haven't heard, they haven't decided yet, and then you never hear from them again. Happened to me twice.

K I kinda have a question about this... It would be one thing if she ommitted it and you pulled it out on a background check, or if she lied and said that no, she didn't have any past convictions. But I don't understand how you could cut her off if she was honest about it. Plus, the severity of the conviction should be taken into account-if it was, say 1/8 of marijuana that's one thing, but if it's a freakin sheet of acid then that's something completely different... Also, did she clean up her act? Maybe she just got caught up in some stuff...

I dunno, I can't help but disagree with the idea that a person gets cut off because of a past transgression. People can change, and someone's got to give them the opportunity to prove that their past is just that-the past.

On the flip side, no she shouldn't have called back. Perhaps if she hadn't done that would you have considered her?

The business has to weigh their risks, and this was a jewelry kiosk (ie easily concealed and liquidated merchandise) It is not in the company's best interest to entertain employment to someone with a sketchy past, and they don't have to. This person should seriously consider establishing a work history in a non cash situation to prove reliability.

At my job, I have to certify annually that I have not been convicted of anything more serious than a traffic offense, that I don't know of anyone in the company who has, and give them permission to run a full background/credit check. For me a conviction for possesion of anything would mean that I lose my job on the spot, no questions asked.
The only words you said that I understood were "His", "Phone" and "Ya'll". The other 2 paragraphs worth was about as intelligible as a drunken Teletubby barkin' come on's at a Hooter's waitress.

And I'd just like to note, as one with a real mod hat, that we have had threads with the drug testing/screening issue go down in flames. This is the lone warning.

Fair enough, I do understand that they don't have to entertain the risk. What about this though:

A woman with little to no training/schooling/experience in a particular field would be hard pressed for positions. Most companies aren't comfortable with the idea of hiring women to do things that require more physical labor-hence the reason men typically work in the back, while women work up front (please don't take this as sexist-this is observation coupled with my own experience in trying to branch out from behind the register). In my head I've scanned the typical entry level positions that women are usually considered for, and there aren't many that don't involve money in some way.

I would feel remorse for someone in this position. It seems a sticky one to be in...
